Displacement speed?

#1

Am trying to add displacement to a model in modo. Have seen the impressive videos but checking the size of my model, laying out uv’s, (luxology, congratulations uv in 301 seriously rocks  ) subdivding once and add ing a displacement texture results in a lockup. It is not easy to see the start res of the full body models used in the vids. I want to texture and detail in modo and then rig and animate in 3dmax. I should probably use a tiff for displacement, does max read the modo vector displacement? Probably only tiff.

Anyhow after adding a displacement texture under utilities (test 1024 x 1024), poly mode, sub d once, vert mode, deform, sculpt, push, brush, nada. Is my model too dense? What is the best strategy? Wanted to do this in modo so I can add clothing in a modelling app.

uvs

zb version

This is the zb version. If modo wont work then I can still export this , uv in modo and bring it back into zb for diplacement map creation then paint texture in modo. Getting the ztool to see the uvs is a hassel though.

All advice appreciated

can you post a file (even if tis only his thigh) with clear baby steps to get your problem to happen?

Load thigh.lxo
add disp map, 2k,exr
click on blah blah tool

dosent work.

Can you post repeatable steps like that? If so please post the file and the steps and we’ll check it out.

Thanx Mike, PMed a link to the whole file. Great if you could take a peek!

Thanx in advance

Your item you were trying to sculpt on was scaled as an item to 4%, freezing that out is the 1st thing I did.

Second thing was you didn’t have a base material. So the displacement has no idea what 1.0 1.0 1.0 color on the painted map should be distance-wise.

Add a material in the shader tree, freeze out your scale and you should be good to go.

Thanx Mike I did as you instructed. The Mesh is displacing but it is like wading through mud. Even with a displacement texture applied it is sooooo slow that its not possible to sculpt. Lighter meshes seem to go well but I am wondering if this mesh is too heavy. Zbrush flies on this computer so rather than modo not doing well I think I am missing something.

Thanx for your time man:)

When sculpting(image based) I find myself using the + and - keys a lot(keep an eye on the poly count at the bottom right). Everything below 1 million is faily smooth for me. Some times there is a slight slow down, when I ‘hit’ the surface with my brush, but after it it’s fairly smooth. If you need more definition, you might also want to hide mesh parts, that you are currently not working on, so you can subdivide further.

Thanx pd!

I think the answer to my problem is build 22855.
Did try hiding parts of the mesh though.
