Dicecting Martin Krol's Methods for Wings

Watching Martin Krol modeling session of “Demon” brought me to thinking about
how I could break-down each step of his modeling session to a frame-by-every-other-frame. For a learning by disecting approach.

After 28 Seconds I stopped!

But I do plan to highlight each of the 76 frames I captured and explain how to acomplish the same results in Wings3D,

I hope to setup a web page with side-by-side instruction and pictures on his initial steps of roughing out a character. (key)Pictures will be able to be blown up, and there will be a download for all the picture files and the 28 second video (wmv format) once finished, but until then I hope to do a back and forth with wingers out there to fine tune the methods used.

Darn I wish I could see that. Unfortunly my ISP blocks geocities for some reason :cry: Any chance of anyone moving it to a different server?

How about he just moving the top 5 polygons down y axis and after that adjust the back edge if it.

Ok, gave this a shot – Pretty close. I had to weld the 2 back vericies together otherwise it looked off (Shoulders angle).

I updated the page to include models files.

First is base.zip (2k): A wings model mirroring the look of step one.

Second is got.zip (2k): which is how far I got when tring to work through steps 1-3, and had a few problems. look at the page above for more information and the model files.

For those of you that do not have problems with geocities, I updated my Wings site, that has links to the geocites version of the above plus the other things I’ve collected on wings over time.

sorry mate, but i think you are way off… egyts suggestion was correct so you should follow it if you want to continue what you are doing… then you wont get those “shading errors” as well…

but seriously, if you already have problem on frame 3 on quite a basic operation you should maybe rethink your whole adventure.

The suggustion was correct for one step, but not beyond that. The “shading Errors” are geomentry being twisted from that method, but that was only caused by moving the head down too much. Has been corrected.

I wouldn’t call it problems, but rather wondering if anybody had another method to prevent the CLEAN-UP needed to get to FRAME 3 of the Demon video. Getting to FRAME 3 is the most step intense part of the entire video…so it seems…minimizing would go over better with viewers I think.

I hadn’t replayed to this post earlier because I wanted to work out how I wanted to fromat the pages for ease of use, but I’ve been done with FRAME THREE since the first posting, but with my proscribed methods.

Anyway, I have what I’ve done thus far uploaded… please give it a look and post any comments you all might have - QUICKER METHODS.

Looking at all the pages I was working on yesterday, I realized that I didn’t have the third step in the tutorial linked to the previous pages.

This has been corrected.

It might also be prevy to note that STEP ONE was only a demo of the conventions to be used in the tutorial, and STEP TWO was breaking down elementy fundamentals for New Wings Users, the methods may be a little longer, but do have a reason and should build; digging progressively into Wings3D functions.

Again, sorry for the navagation mixup - this is still a WIP SITE/Tutorial.

Quick question,for step 13,14 and 15,
why not just select both edges and collapse?
That’d do what you want (welding the verts at the ends of the edges,
in one step.

I didn’t realize that would work!

I had tried the collapse trick earlier when playing with the methods I was going to use in creating this tutorial and it DID NOT WORK, so I skipped that method, however IT DOES WORK great here!, So I added it!

I’ll make my modifications tonight.

BTW. I have saved all my steps in seperate wings files just for this purpose, to go back and make quick adjusments.

if you would look at the part where he cuts the demon in half later on you would realize how far off you are. and how many unnecessary steps you have done already for your notorious “frame 3”

go back and do what egyt said. its correct and far simpler.

It’s simply a series of extrudes and moves,that’s it.

Correct, it was my interpatation of methods that could be used in Wings3D to get to the desired effect - in the larger picture.

Let me better explain.

  • First, I’ve never used Mirai.
  • Second, alot is happening in the video in the first 28 seconds, and in that 28 seconds NO mouse, no highlight or any popup menus are shown, and in that 28 seconds he has a roughted out humanoid form.
  • Third, this is a learning experience all around.
  • Forth, and the rest, is based on assumptions, and at this point they seem to be off/wrong, however the end result is the same/similar. I am looking alittle bit ahead and taking steps to be farther along in the long run.

Thanks for the pics. I’m sure you can see that I misread the outline of the model (from the front). From your picture I thought the Highlighted area was Flat on the Y axis. A fault of an under trained eye seeing from only one angle.

However (on both comments), the effect is going to come out the same. Step three could be bypassed (NOTE: Adjustsments have been made to Step two and Step three pages, and I am refering to those, not previous versions), but I think doing it this way shows more Wings Features, even though they are not needed here.

Here’s how I’m looking at this:
Later in the video when we see the Demon’s back the Edges are added, with the used method the edges are already there, and you learn an alternative Wings3D’s features to-boot.

I do suspect I’ll make the final version of this tutoral short and simple, and remove any unneeded steps maybe alternates version, One to learn Wings and one to mimic, but for now I’ll leave it as is.

I do appreachate the feedback though. Keep me in check.

@StephanD, do you have a link to this Laa-Yosh SubDiv Ressource page you mentioned? I’m thinking it is some place on Spiraloid?

Last note: I have went back and made corrections to all my posts in this thread…hopefully they are less contradicting when read as a whole now.

One sugestion:

You can simplify the first 4 steps
1: Select a vertical Edge.
2: Edge Ring [ G ]
3: Select one top horizontal Edge.
4: Select Face Mode [ F ]

into 2 steps:
1: select top face
2: Select Face [ F ]

as it selects all faces connected to your current selection (even if it is already just faces).
