Hey guys! Sorry to have my first post be a question, but I’m dusting off maya for the first time in close to a decade and ran into some problems that I just can’t wrap my head around by myself.
So for a bit of background, I am a production artist who has primarily worked in 2d for the past few years. I saw thisamazing presentation Raymond Crook did on how they put together the game Broken Age and specifically how they built their characters out of layered planes.
So I started trying it out for myself and was pretty impressed with my first time results, but noticed two things:
-
For the character’s back arm (which is layered underneath the body both in the scene and in all my layering hierarchies, no matter how much I pull it towards the camera I can never get it to appear OVER the body in animations. So while everything looks fine as the character stands still, any sort of dynamic animation gets layered weird.

I wanted to be able to change their outfits, so I duplicated the arm and torso planes, brought them to the front both on the stage and in my layering hierarchy and copied the skin weighting of the arms. Unfortunately, being closer to the camera seems to mean that there is a bit of an offset in the animation. Does anyone know of a way I can make them move together perfectly? Thanks!
