Depth Blur bad

#1

Hey there, I have been testing a rendering pipeline, from renderman to fusion. I haven’t had any luck embedding z depth into the Z channel of any files, so I am rendering a separate pass with Z-depth in the colour channel. This seems to work fine, and I am rendering out colour and Z in 16 bit tiff’s. When combining them in fusion with the depth blur node, it is accessing the z channel fine, but the depth blur effect doesn’t seem to be working quite right. It has a central zone with no blur, and a zone, fore and aft of it which is highly blurred… However, there is NO blending between the two zones, so settings change this.

Is this effect some problem with scale, or possibly something wrong with using 16 bit int channel as the source of the z depth.

Any info greatly appreciated.

You should aim for float zdepth information if you have the disk space available. In the case of the blur node not producing the depth of field you are wanting, it could be a few things or combination thereof.

Be sure that you have the z scale and depth of field settings to something appropriate, and that will all depend on what the values are out of your renderer. Generally, set the depth of field to 0, and the z scale to 1. Then begin to increase them to the value you need. Sometimes these values will be so small that the slider will completely jump over them, so manually typing in 0.001 may be required.
