Demand for Game development tutorials?

#4

It would be good if there were some tutorials beyond “this is a varible… this is a for loop…” and more like the more advanced sections of Nehe etc.

Things like how to add a scripting language to control game play code. Maybe covering some 2D graphics programming would be good as well as 3D. And how to add sound could be useful too.
And various ways of control using keyboard and mouse.

Also more concept driven stuff such as calculating certain dynamics and collision detection algorithms (doesn’t have to be the most optimised - people can look for that themselves later).

Re: Rendermaniac.

You live in london? I hold a meet-up at center-point every month - give me a PM if you’re interested…

2D programming? Thats what I’m best at - I was hoping one of you guys would ask for it. I know a trick or two with DirectDraw…

Collision isn’t my strong point but I know how to do a simple shoot-em-up - bullets and stuff. I’ll cover that at least!

Anyone else?

If its not too much trouble, a section on low poly character modelling and rigging with attention paid to problem deformation areas like shoulders etc.
Sorry if that is too much to address, its just that there is a real lack of technical guidance in these areas for people on the net.

Re: Ayjay.

I’m not going to mess you around - I haven’t done much in the way of 3D programming - just some basic textured cubes from scratch. I do know a fair bit of 2D though…

Still, when I have enough money for a decent 3D-modelling package - I’ll be sure to look into it for you.

Sorry, that was a pretty big ask ! I didnt mean to be demanding.
Any tutorial will be great, its always exciting to learn new tricks.
Thanks for helping out.

Re: Ayjay.

No problem - you don’t ask, you don’t get!

In time, I shall most likely cover this sort of thing - its all a matter of time.

boone !!! get on with the tuts you wanker :scream: hehehe.

screw 3d…it starts with 2d so you’ll be doing me a BIG favour.
as for anyone else who also happens to be doing animation with max or maya look at this as a FUN way to get used to the technical side of cg.scripting, expressions will make much more sense after youve made your own lil 2d game and gone through compiling ,debugging, pulling hair like a million times.

thanks a lot boone.

Well, if you’re going to be that way about it - I’d better get writing!

Urrrrggg…two choc-chip-muffins & a glass-of-coke later, I’ve almost finished writing up my first tutorial which covers basic game-loops and a simple program structure…

I’ve never wrote a tutorial or guide like this before, so I’ve just slapped it together. It should go up tommorow night - so don’t expect a master-piece created by Andre LaMothe or something perfect like that…you may be confused with it!

Anyway, when its up - tell me what you found useful and what you didn’t. And if I’ve missed out on a few concepts that could have made it easier to understand - LET ME KNOW!!!

Tommorow night it is then!

#13

of course that i would like, but do you use a software engine just program a directX o c???

Re: Jean3D.

Cor - Blimey! This was a while back…I’m doing Maya programming at the moment. I’ve really had to put the Games programming on the back-burner for the time being…

When using DirectX through Visual C++ - one has to make their own game-engine!!!

I did mean to go through the text-side of games programs - something most books skip on on - amungst other things.

When I get a little more time - providing I have time when I start making my first film next year - I shall hope to write on the text-subject.

Personally I would love to make tutorials for you begininers out there - but are you lot interested?

If there is enough demand, I shall start work right away… [/B]

Yes. If you are up for requests, I would love to know how todo shadows, shaders, and depth maps.

#16

I would love that too! 2D or 3D, as long as its coded in C++:buttrock:

#17

Sure !

#18

Yo, guys!

Ummm…I’m very grateful for this recent “rivival” in interest for more game tutorials…but I’m kinda busy at the moment!

I replyied in this thread about four posts ago - that explains my current situation…

I would, however like to make one point…my tutorials aren’t specific to one single language or app. I believe that games programming is a labour of love - not simply a case of who has the best technology or the most popular app…

Check out my first tutorial in this section of CGTalk to see what I’m trying to accomplish. If you want code to setup DirectX or OpenGL - forget it! Go and get a book by Andre LaMothe or Robert Dunlop if you need technical help…they are the Gods of programming - I don’t even compare!

What I teach is basic games programming that most books on the subject totally skip. Making a basic menu is perhaps the most common feature in any game - but you aren’t given any clue as to how you should go about it. And Text-engines - not a Dicky-bird! Amungst other stuff…

Oh, well - I was watching the Hulk, so I’ll be back later…

I’m not sure how much it would accomplish since there are lots of tutorials out there on the net already ain’t there? Of course it would be great for this site to have some of the action too yes?

But you’ve gotta be better than what’s already out there. So good luck and I’m looking forward to learning a new thing or two.

#20

Boone, can you make some tuts about making simple games with Torque engine?

#21

Re: Darkor.

Yeah, load of tuts on how to create a DirectX interface and graphics - but not much in the way of the game itself…

Re: Sadistiko.

I’ve heard of the Torque engine - but can’t seem to remember much about it…:hmm:

How about you make a tut?:stuck_out_tongue:

#22

hehe  I wouldnt ask you to make one if I know how to do it

Ah well, how you’re gonna accomplish that would be kinda hard wouldn’t it? Games in the same genre all use different techniques and all that. It would be difficult to come up with a one size fit all solution.
