decal stencil transparency problem

#1

Hi all, im having some trouble painting a stencil with transparency.
Im following the notes on this here exactly: http://download.autodesk.com/us/mudbox/help2010/index.html?url=WS73099cc142f48755-471cc4bd11960d8a16c-6ed7.htm,topicNumber=d0e11108 and it dosnt seem to be working.
Im trying to paint some decals, so im making parts of the image transparent, as you can see in the image below the general transparency is there, however its in the falloff or the semi-transparency where things dont seem to work. i have projection colour set to white and parts where there is transparency seem to be taking the white completley, so i end up with a completley hard edge and everything looking solid which is not good for decals.
Have tried on other images too, can post more images in needed.

As you can see the stencils transparency is there but when painted it gets the colour of the projection. How can i paint a stencil that has transparency?

Here is the original image decal incase anyone wants to have a go(you will need to copy to new document 16bit as per the above instructions):

Hi Flares,

I am quite new at mudbox so I haven’t tried this yet, but I notice you are using a jpg instead of a png.
jpg format does not have transparency, so I am wondering if you use a png and make the parts transparent in photoshop if that would work.

I have probably stated the obvious so forgive me if I have LOL.

Hi, thanks for the reply - im new to it too. The jpg is just a screen cap of the problem in mudbox not the decal itself. The decal is being saved as 16bit tiff with transparency.
Im not sure, will need to try further, but i think i may have figured it out - Because the stencil has transparency it needs to be painted through once to achieve the same transparency found in photoshop and the original file. In the past ive painted with solid stencils only and go over and over them, but on transparent stencils this has a build up effect like when duplicating transparent objects in ps. As i said this is just a guess will need to try it out.
