wow, great painting shapemaster. very expressive and dynamic in colors!

Nice work Shapemaster, and definately for the time that you took on it. The flow is nice, but I see, what you mean about the colour. I do like the dynamic flow of the figure. On your Osprey, I see what you mean, and I don’t do enough Mechanical pieces anymore. I do think that you got the idea and colour down. It does feel in motion as well.

Thank you ofr the welcome Ted, and I do hope to post more, as I really need it. chuckles

Here is my piece of the Osprey. It is photoshop in about 50 minutes.

As always take care, be safe, and farewell

#744

Hey everyone. Nice to see much activity over the weekend.
For today lets take a painting from an old master.

CARAVAGGIO
Judith Beheading Holofernes (detail)
c. 1598
Oil on canvas
Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica, Rome

#745

heres my attempt about 40 minutes:

#746

Nice topic sir, as I love Caravaggio’s work. I hope that you add a few more. How about a Bougueraeu, Rembrant, or a Velazquez? looks hopeful

Nice start on your painting. You kept the warm tones well within the piece.

Here is my attempt, about 50 to 55 minutes in photoshop cs. I tried to use the same brush as practice. It would have been shorter, but I noticed that the angle of the head was off. Doh!! It still seems to be. Any critiques would definatley be welcome.

I really need to learn to blend better in photoshop. On to the next, since I have a lot to learn

Gosh, everyone is so good. I’m embarrassed of posting T_T

Irony:
Since the painting is about a beheading, it was only fair that one of my mistakes was to “cut” the back of her skull ><
Unfortunately, I only realized after resizing in photoshop.

Mailing tips, critics, and comments are very welcome. =)

#748

hey aethalin wow the resemblence is awesome how did you do that? And I have to say that I like the way you blended the colors. I just have a tipp for you don’t know if its helpfull or not. Just set your bursh like that for coloring: hard round brush - pressur sensitiv to flow and opacity. That works fine for me.
And next time when you last minute scale or move the head, get rid of the boarders.

welcome leath to this forum. Please don’t feel embarrassed by the stuff of others it is here to learn. And there is no need to be embarressed because your sketch is very nice. Good resemblence and I feel that this is way harder with a pencil on paper.
The cin is maybe a little bit to long.
About the backhead. I really had the same problem like you because the head disapears into the black on the painting and the skull seems to short.

For today lets get inspired by this nice pirate lady:

#750

wow, very interesting one. … i want to try the caravaggio too :frowning: but i am out of town . . on a week long break :frowning: . . i’ll try both when i get back

I think i spent too much time on the ear and mouth and the shadow transition… 45mins so the rest of the image was just quickly sketched in there and I didn’t finishe the eyes but hey that happens. mine doesn’t look poutie enough… I don’t know if its the mouth of the eyebrows. and i totally gave this girl my nose I looked at everyone else and the original just before posting this and notice that she has a very straight sharp nose and i gave her a curved up rounded one. oops. better luck next time i guess

I have been a bit slack on this thread recently. I don’t usually go for vehicles as a subject, but you should always step outside your comfort zone! Restricted palette and a tiny (2%) radial blur to cheat the rotor tips. Stopped at 30mins.

#753

this is mine thx

#754

After putting my sketch next to the original on photoshop, I saw that:
I got her face very wrong T_T Too wide this time.
The hat too wasnt very good, and something about her pose. Somehow it feels like the right arm should be farther from the body…
why is it so hard to see those things while im drawing?? :stuck_out_tongue:

Overall, Im quite satisfied with the initial result.

Hiya and good work everyone :),

thank you Ted. I usually look for the negative spaces. It is easy to tell on the many rich paintings of Caravaggio and the like. With all the black and rich dark brown, you can differentiate shapes. It is, how I was taught to work out figures, when I am having issues after the initial gesture. You should give it a try :). Doh!!! coughs Well umm I was checking to see, if you would notice. Umm yeah!! ducks

Leath, nice initial sketch. You may want to check the shouldersm as they should be wider. If you have issues with the figure, check the negative spaces. With so much black and deep colour, you can get a good idea of the forms and shapes of the figure. It helps me a great deal. On her right shoulder, think of how the shoulder is rolled forward. it should give you a better idea. :).

Zorn, nice initial sketch and colour comp, try to bring out the richer colours of the picture, and remember how much light bounces :). Nice start though.

andalusite, nice start on the piece, you have a nice colour worked out fairly quickly. I think that it needs to be a tad darker.

Here is mine for the day, a nice topic by the way. She has a nice dynamic pose :).
Here is the initial sketch 25 to 30 minutes.

[left]Here is the colour work of the same piece. I spent about a hour and a half on it. I tried to fix some of the anatomy issues, and clean up the pose. I probably spent to long on it. Doh!!

Thank you for taking a look

hey everyone.

nikitarose: thank you. And thanks for posting comments to other pictures. That is an important part and very usefull. I wish more people would give feedback to other pictures. So keep that!

aethalin: thanks for answering my question and I’m happy that I pased your test ;). Negativ space is a really good tool, but sometimes when I’m very concentrated I forget to check that aspect. Your pirate drawing is awesome! How you rendered the shoulder and face area is top. Good color observation. The details in the clothing and boots is very nice. You really enrich this thread. And last but not least the pose is very dynamic! And thank you as well for commenting on others picture.

Zorn1: Welcome to this thread and I hope we’ll see more from you.

leath: overall I really like your sketch and I like the face it is good looking. The body is maybe a bit to thin and the hat is a bit to big.

here’s my quick (30 min) attempt I really want to go back and spend some more time with that picture.
-The pose is not dynamic enough yet

  • The head is somehow placed wrong
  • hte left arm is too long…

so theres much to do…

Exercise of today is to create your own outfit. That can be a sketch or a fully developed drawing whatever you wish. Let your imagination go wild.

#759

(about 10 minutes)
