A primitive navigation guide for hobbyist/recreational space travelers. The red end always points toward the most prominent gravity source, so the colors and lights are able to give relevant bearing information. The sign, eh, probably not so useful in space :stuck_out_tongue: The bulge in the middle might house a gyro for stability, and maybe so it could like radio information to other guides or ships passing by.

Tomorrow: SPACE JUNK!

EDIT - For those of you who were interested, many of the older ships’ comp graphics have been updated to show wireframes, too.

Nice I like those new ones  Esp the FTL gate. Reminds me of Cowboy Bebop.

As promised, SPACE JUNK. Although, to me it kind of looks like a robo space fish. So maybe it’s that. But nominally, at least, it is space junk.

Thus ends Props Week, and Week 3 of Daily Mini Ships! Currently my plan is to finish about 50 or so of these things, so I am maybe 1/3 or 1/4 of the way there I think.

Thanks to everyone for their encouragement and motivation!

#104

man, this stuff rocks.
are you planning on putting all this into anything?
and how long till Halogen’s finished?
great work there too.

#105

Confracto - as of right now, maybe. I will definitely do a sort of Micro Machines collector-style render at the end of all 50-odd ships. I think now I would like to do a full sort of environmental render, with all the ships cruising about, doing their thing, but I’m not sure if that’d be worth it or not? These ships are awfully small already, they may get lost in a big scene, I’m not sure. I’m not sweating it too much, whatever I do with them it won’t be for a couple months.

EDIT - As for Halogen, well we can’t put an exact due date on it, but I can say that we have half of all of the units complete and in-game, and it is REALLY awesome in motion  there is a lot of progress on all fronts, and there will be a lot of new media and news about Halogen coming out very soon, I believe that is all I can say!

#106

ur works is really stylish !, i love the style of the tex,is very clean.
is it for mobile games?
good work

#107

endseason - my target specs for this project are more or less what a system like the Nintendo DS could handle. At these sizes I think I could fit around 20 ships on-screen at once (even without LODs), which is plenty for most game styles. With LODs, probably ten times that! However, the ships aren’t really destined to be used in anything in particular, they’re just for fun and practice, I’d really like a job as a portable/mobile 3D artist!

#108

i like this ultra lowpoly style… verry nice work

#109

Cool stuff, what are you planning to do with it?

Mind releasing them as a pack under a CreativeCommons licence (check my sig)?

#110

Makowka - umm that would be an interesting possibility actually, but I will decide sometime later.

Here are the ships for Monday and Tuesday:

I have not textured them yet, I will do that tomorrow night. I thought it would be fun if I put these up as an SDK first so other people could take a crack at doing some 64x64 textures! They’re very fast, and I think they’re fun. Here is the SDK for these two ships:

Alien Ships SDK

Have fun! I will post my own skin sometime tomorrow night. Thanks!

EDIT - I am noticing some similarities between these two ships and ASX-2 and ASX-7! My visualization of them with their textures is quite different though, its weird how much influence textures have when there is so little geometry to work with! I hope to see some good variety tomorrow

Very cool thread and excellent work Adam. It’s refreshing to see someone finding time to work on quick fun designs like this. At this rate, you could populate an entire space shooter within a month.

#112

Hehe, ok, here’s my go at the alien fighter. First time trying anything like this but it looks too fun to pass on. 16 colours.

Thanks to ImageShack for Free Image Hosting

#113

Awesome job Archangel! That is creepy you have used many of the same colors that I planned too!

#114

Great, just contact us (FreeGameArts) if you feel like releasing them.

Uhh and one thing: I guess you could get even more interesting shapes by useing singlesided planes. It is obviously that you arn’t using those because of Wings3d’s approach to modelling ( I am a major Wings3d user too btw), but it isn’t impossible to do in Wings.
Simply make a volume that is only connected by one edge, and then apply the ‘hole’ material to all but one side. When exporting it will only export the one sided plane

#115

JK - Actually if you look closely there are single sided planes on some of the older ships and props, specifically #1, #6, #11, #12, and #15. The main reason I have not been using them more is that my texture resolution is so low that I can basically only make flat or very chunky alphas with them (as I am restricting myself to a single bit of alpha on this project).

Also, when I render them it is a pain because I have to copy out a separate alpha map in the app I use  I will try to keep it mind as I progress through Alien Week though! Thanks!

#116

Haven’t checked the forum for a while… and this thread restores a bit of my faith in this forum… great stuff, Adam. Creative, consistent (both in style and in your effort doing all this) and thus inspiring. Keep it up!

#117

Wanzai - Wow, thanks man! I really appreciate that. I had a CRAZY day at work yesterday (13 hours!) so I had to skip a night, but I will be posting buttloads tonight, skins for monday and tuesday plus an all new alien ship for wednesday. Thanks again!

#118

Well I will not be able to do a ship tonight, so that means two ships tomorrow! However I am skinning Monday and Tuesday’s ships tonight still. This week is Alien Week, so I am trying to design ships that have a somewhat consistent look and all share the same 16-color palette. Here is the Alien Fighter:

I am workin on coloring the cruiser now  It will be up in an hour or so. Thanks!

#119

I should probably mention that my palette for this week is inspired by the aliens from Flashback, an old sidescrolling platformer in the style of PoP but with a sci-fi theme.

Haha, Glad to know that theirs a reason for all the pink

Colors aside, very cool models there, keep up good work.
