Crossing the uncanny valley WIP

#301

so i decided to move to higher resolution renders.
hehe, its like switching to a higher subdivision in zbrush it gives a more accurate representation of the final thing, lots of new flaws emerge (like hair being too thick), but theres also lot more room for improvement. if only the rendertimes were faster
but i think im slowly starting to like where its going. so thats a good sign

C&C welcome

#302

still on the hair, still not there, this is the latest iteration:

i think im gonna go for maybe more interesting haircut, hard to think of any that would fit the character i have in mind though. but whatever, its worth a try.

#303

in the meantime i had a revelation about where i want to take this project, and so i changed my mind about the haircut and started a completely different one from scratch

hair 1st pass wip :

#304

Not sure if asked, but what is the hair solution you use. They look very realistic.

#305

β–‘ Thank you.
β–‘ Yeti
β–‘ VRay

#306

Thanks.

& Keep up the amazing work.

#307

This is outstanding, so realistic. You said for hair, you used Yeti?

#308

β–‘thats right
β–‘hair | beard | brows | eyelashes
β–‘are all made with yeti

#309

Love the viewport shot with all of the guide curves.

Are you using the VRay hairmtl or a custom VRay shader? Been having a hard time figuring out which can be more effective, speed vs. quality etc. Would love your thoughts.

#310

well, you can say its custom, but its just the classic
vray hair mtl 3 with few gradient and dirt maps.
only instead of the primary specular component
im using reflections β–‘ heres why

#311

heres a small update with messed up colors (im still having this problem with photoshop displaying different colors thant the input/output)

#312

experimenting with hair specularity:

#316

im trying to figure out the appropriate focal length for my camera here.

50mm vs 85mm

im hoping to find a sweet spot somewhere in between these two

#317

maybe like 75mm should be great. 85mm is a bit to weird. 74mm is a lense of 3d.sk website reference. So evryone is use to that perspective lens.

#318

thanks for the info Sam

update:

today i started to work on my final hair pass - the individual strands of hair.
naturally hanging from various places

#319

weird but cool thing happening to my zdepth over refractive surfaces

#320

Great progress and I really do love the last render!!
The 85mm is better I think, less distortion. I like the individual hair strands, definitely adds the necessary randomness.
What are you going to do with the final head? And ideas for a scene etc?

Cheers
Andre
