Creation of a desert scene

A Desert Scene

Hello. I’ve been doing 3D for a hobby and have a somehow limited knowledge of it. I use Cinema 4D and can model fairly complicated meshes. However, I suck at animating, rendering & lighting, TEXTURING (this is what angers me most). The fact is, I dont have a very big experience and theorical knowledge of it all. I know what to use the various functions of the software, but fail at use them efficiently.

Let’s keep it simple; I need pratice and support. In other words, I’m looking for someone that could take the time to instruct me about various things. I’m not asking for a 3D class, but I’d just like to have hints, someone that’d look over my shoulder from time to time, and say if what I’m doing is right. It would be greatly appreciated.

To begin more seriously in 3D, I’d like to create a desert scene. I think this is a good point to start for someone with my knowledge. I’ve already done the simple tutorials provided with the software, and need something a little bit more avanced. I’d like my desert scene to be very realistic. Take a look at this:

This is about the ambience I’d like to create: similar colors, lighting and atmosphere. Also, let’s say I’d like to reproduce THIS image in particular, except for the trucks. Those are the things I need support on:

[ul]
[li]Texturing![/li][li]Modeling the sand dunes so they look realistic[/li][li]Arranging the scene so it looks to have some depth. In other words, I’d like my desert to look like a desert.[/li][li]Dust. I’d like to give the impression it’s windy, and that some “real” dust is shattered around.[/li][li]Lighting. I’d like to give the impression the scene is lighted by “real” sun.[/li][li]Rendering. Make it look realistic.[/li][/ul]You can see a lot of things need to be done, but I would extremely thankfull to anyone who provides me with some help.

Thanks!

Uspilon.

PS: You might wonder why I don’t simply subscribe to a 3D class… Well, first of all, I don’t really have time. I have to concentrate on my studies. Secondly, I have no cash; I’m still at high school and my budget is… limited.
Also, I’m part of the International Education Program, and at the last year of high school, we have a big project, called the personal project. This “personal project” lasts all year long, and the students can choose their own project. I’ve chosen to do a 3D creation, but I lack of expertise… This is why I need a little bit of help for this.

That’s pretty much why there is a WIP section of the CGTalk forum. I’d suggest you start a discussion thread over there in the forum for 3D still art; or if you are wanting to be more software specific about some of your questions, then post in the forum for that particular software (Max, Maya, etc.).
