Creating the illusion dirt with ambient occlusion - help please!

Hi all,
I have been looking around for a dirt plugin for max 9 but I keep being told that it was no longer needed because you can create a “dirt” look with ambient occlusion, I have fiddled about but with no success. I cannot find a tutorial on it. Can someone please point me to one or give me some basic idea of where/how I do this?

if u lower the samples the shadows get all blotchy and it looks dirty
