Creating hair in 3ds max 6 without any plugins (nice results) + max files

#1

I don’t know if you guys are watching the Particle Flow thread, so this is for people who isn’t.

I’m here to introduce some tests I’ve did based on Borislov tecnique.

This hair was created in 3ds max 6 with out any plugins.

*I’m here to discuss some shaders ideas too, since that Particle Flow thread is just for particles…

3 max files with shaders:

this is pretty neat

thanx for sharing!

this looks REALLY REALLY good… thanks for sharing… have to check max files later on though…

will 4 sure let know if i get any ideas to improve…

That’s f***king awesome!!!

:buttrock:

Thanks for sharing. Studying them now…

Gee, I need to start REALLY take a look on PFlow…

Tnks for the comments, I need to work the shader and try to render with some GI.

Here you can find Bobos tutorial about it:

I’m trying here to create some hairstyles and fur. Looks very promissing.

Need improvement.

Here is my version:

Nice!! Thanks for sharing this! Studying files has taught me quite a bit over the years so I always appreciate the effort.

I took the texturing to next level using Bobo’s script which makes particles take their color from source object. Now its much easier to make complicated color variations by just texturing the source object instead hair.

thank or sharing
it’s look like real hair
thank lot:applause: :applause:

What happens if you animated the hair and it moves? Does the color change or stay the same?

Looks great!:bounce: :applause: :bounce:

That’s very interesting MasterBercon!

Could you give us more information about how you did it?

tnks.

looks good but when i render your examples max crashes sometimes, seems they need a lot of ram for rendering.

Since the particles take the color at the emission point, and the emission point is sticky in the case of the hair flow, the color should be constant per hair particle no matter what motion you have…

Ahh cool thanks

Is there anyway to make Particleflow scatter particles based on polygons material IDs?

I was making multiple selections with Mesh Select modifiers and inside it chosing different IDs, this way I could apply different hair patterns but I can’t find a way to PF identify not the selection but the IDs.

Any ideas?

If yes it will be more easy because would be necessary just a editable mesh base.

Thanks for sharing this piledotNET, it looks really good i must say.

I’ve been experimenting a bit with it too and i have this suggestion to make it render a bit faster, you gave the cilinders quite a few sides, while only 3 seem to do fine because the hairs shouldn’t be more then a few pixels wide anyway, and the smoothing will keep the shading fine. I used a bit more segments in the height though, to get nicer curves, i think that’s a better use of poly’s then adding to many sides to the hairs.

Here’s also a tip how to increase the render times dramaticly ;)This test shows how well it works with GI, it is lighted by one omni on the side and a skylight. I removed the selfillumination and replaced the colorgradient with a solid color to better see the actual GI lightning. It took more then 3 hours to render, but that’s without any optimization (i just put in some settings i thought would work and left my computer alone to do the rest)

I must say i personly quite liked the result (althought it can still be improved al lot), so here it is:

To bad the jpeg compression made my high anti-alliasing settings useless :hmm:

Very nice results Arnage! I’ve didn’t made any tests using GI yet.

But about the number of sides, using just 3 depending how far the camera is you’ll have nice results but closer shots Specular Highlight won’t be as good as having a cylinder with more sides. try your self and analise the difference between Speculars

And I’ve published 18 minutes video tutorial. It’s free.

I’d love to watch that video PiledotNET, but i don’t really understand your site  Since i can’t read a word on there i can’t find a “register here!” button and it seems like i have to login before i’m allowed to download…

Here’s also a little movie i made to find a good amount of sides. It’s shows 6 rotating cylinders, 3 big ones and 3 thin ones with 3, 4 and 8 sides each. 3 sides gives bad results indeed, but the 4 sided one is nearly as good as the 8 sided one when viewed from far away, so i guess i’m sticking to 4 sides unless the camera get really close to the hair.

I posted instructions on how to register and log in in the PFlow thread in the Resources conference.

Here is the text again:

When you click the Windows Media Player link, a new window should open asking for email and password. If you don’t have a password for redPixel, click the last link saying
“Novo usuário? Cadastre-se gratuitamente!”
(New user? Register for free), then enter your email (twice) and your desired password (twice) and then do the same in the previous screen that will appear again after registration.
Then the Windows Media Player (9!) should open and sream the tutorial.

I don’t speak Portuguese myself, but after learning 4-5 other languages (and a couple of programming ones), any european language becomes easy to understand…

Cheers,
Bobo
