Creating a model for a 3D LED media installation


I am trying to create an animation for a 3D LED media installation. I want to illustrate how an image would go through the LED grid of lights suspended on cables in layers. The image in the real installation would be produced by lighting up individual lights. The way we made this model in other 3D tools was to have a 3D object move through the grid, turn off its visibility and then use where it collided with an LED light, key it to turn on a glow. See image. I’d like to recreate it in Cinema 4D but don’t know how.

Basically—you can set up a cloner composed of visible lights, and then move an effector with falloff through it to reveal, or change color, or scale up or down.
