create poly tool in maya, is there something like that in wing3d? cause i cant stand modeling from a box. i like drawing my stuff as almost a patch, then extrude edges and so forth. anyone know of something
Create poly tool, like in maya?
Sorry Lev,
Wings is all about box modelling… because of it’s erlang architecture it requires that every poly is closed (winged-edge) and therefore patch modeling is not possible.

Well that’s something I just don’t understand, I love box modeling…
but then again, I do like sculpting rock, so I like to attack box modelling in the same way.
But I still understand the desire for a tool similar to the create poly tool.
Perhaps the closed poly thing doesn’t have to stop wings having such a tool. One of the first things you do after getting your shape right is usually extrude it, so Wings could work in a similar way, only the first extrusions already done for you, keeping it closed poly.
So you would plot out your points in the front or side view and then wings would join the dots and extrude the shape to keep it closed poly.
If thats something you think you could live with, why not suggest it to Bjorn?
L - Dunno if this (first bit) is of interest?
If don’t want to bother ‘cutting in’ extra verts to the basic canvas, create a cone with N edges, collapse the apex …
Rotate to appropriate view and use Tweak mode?

thanks jdex, thanks puzzle. while watching lord of the rings two towers last night. i thought, if i just use the top of a cylinder, and move the vertices around, i could get basically the same thing im after. just going to take longer.
and puzzle that link you sent, that helps alot. thanks.
i think, wings is a volume modeler, its how all works there.
if you want to do it poly by poly, i would suggest you blender. its even faster - but there are not that many tools for box models.
qiv, the guy has maya… I see no reason for him to use Blender.
Then again, I have a hard time understanding why you would want to have Wings behave like Maya, if you already have Maya?
If Maya works good for poly by poly modelling, by all means, use it for that. If you want to use a good sculpting like approach instead, with the wonderous tweak… use wings for that.
I think Lev, like myself knows a good tool when he sees one. There are a growing number of people who have access to the costly full-featured apps who have discovered that those full-featured apps have workflow issues due to the vast quantity of tools… Wings doesn’t suffer from this problem and once you get used to it’s abilities and limitations, it can increase you qualitative/quantitave output.
thanks JDex, that is exactly why i am using it. also, i can download it in school and model in class. that is another big reason. it is just weird for me to get use to. does anyone know were i find the pref file? i set the D key to deselect, but it also is adding vert, edge, face mode at the top of the screen. i dont know why its doing that. it is using the d key for more than one command. does anyone know how i fix that.
Glad I wasn’t speaking out of turn Lev… but that was my best guess as to why you were learning wings3d… Sorry can’t help on the pref file… i don’t customise. I improvise:D
<< … using the d key for more than one command… >>
By default D = repeat last command (shift + D, ditto with drag)
Did you delete this before assigning D to deselect?
I haven’t re-assigned many of the default hotkeys, but when I have done so I’ve deleted the original asignment first - and haven’t had any big problems
<< anyone know were i find the pref file? >>
It’s in the main wings folder
Help | Defined Hotkeys might also be worth looking at - to check whether a key (you wish to assign) is already being used to one of the default commands.

ok puzzle, how do i just delete what hotkey its on? im sure that would work, then i could assign what i want.
<< how do i just delete what hotkey its on >>
Highlight the relevant command - and press delete key (not backspace) - the hot key letter should then disappear from view in the menu listing.
Don’t forget to delete the ‘other’ hotkey binding (if you’re swapping stuff around) as well, of course.
eg for putting deselect on D
Delete D from Edit | Repeat last op
Delete Space from Select | Deselect
Then return to Sel | Deselect, press Insert key - and press D (if that’s what you want)
