Could a model be 'de-smoothed'?

#1

A couple of minutes ago I decided to return to a model I haven’t worked on in what feels like a couple of months or so. Anyways, I decided to smooth the model just for fun to play around with the settings, but I forgot to undo it. I then closed out of Wings and clicked on the save option by accident, and am now stuck with a model that I want to ‘de-smooth’ if at all possible.

-My question: Is it possible?
-I’m not really happy with the other option of going back and individually restoring it to its previous status. Thankfully, I only smoothed it once…

I appreciate any feedback, and am aware of the slim chance of a ‘de-smooth’-option…

I fear I have to say that this is not possible … :frowning:
As I remember I think there is no such thing like Mayas History or Attribute Channel …
Correct me if I’am wrong but I would definitive say that’s not possible … !!!

Nope. Don’t think so either. However, maybe you might want to check your outliner…maybe something there…or those .backup files or something in the same directory.

but the chances of you retreiving the model are very very slim.
Next time, I suggest you use shift+tab to view your model smoothed.

Well, I didn’t expect much and have learned my lesson. Thank you both, Sentenza and dpvtank.

Just a workflow tip to lessen the impact of this sorta thing: Use the Save Incrementally feature rather than just Save so you have multiple copies of your model at different stages. That way if you smooth and save over the file by mistake, you can go back to a slightly older file and just do a few moves to get back to the same place. I lost alot of models before I started using Save Incremental.

Check your folder, you should have backups
with the name XXX.#wings# or XXX.wings~

Just rename them and open.

yeah…that’s what I was talking about. but chances are…those are ruined since he saved his mesh and closed it and re-opened it up and tried to de-smooth it.

I need an opinion or two, please…

I was just looking at the model and was wondering if I should even bother trying to delete a whole bunch or just leave it the way it is? Here’s a few pics:

-It’s currently at 1,410 polygons; I haven’t touched it since I posted this thread.
-So, any thoughts?

This has happened to me several times and I also want to know about this.

Yes,I too lost a model like that.

Dumb me,I usually smooth it and go into proxy mode to have an idea of what it’s like with 2 iterations.

When I opened back the file I had forgotten to undo and saved over it…Backup file were also the same.

Had to delete the poor thing to stop both of our suffering(actually wings suffered a bit too).

Surprisingly though,it motivated me into doing something better, and,IMO,I did!

Hopefully someone out there is listening and has heard our plea for undo-able smoothing iterations.

gosh darn it, right after i post, I close a subdivided mesh, god I’m a moron.

If your patient enuf you could selct evry other edge or point and collapse them…tedious i know but its the only way:()…if you have 3ds max you could import it and optimze the mesh…if not check to see if any other free app has a mesh optimization thingy…

I import Rhino surfaces and use wings to finish them off. Rhino is known for exporting high poly models when a low poly model would do. Even with a good mesh setting it will still be pretty high. So, I just select one of every other edge and then hit L to select the entire loop that the edges are on (or g… depends on the dierection) and then I switch to point mode and hit the delete key. Takes a minute on my PC but it’s a fast way to streamline a poly model. Then I go an dbuild it up again in the areas I want.

Thank you all very much for the feedback! As always, I appreciate it.

-I’ve decided to press on with the model and have already made a few tweaks here and there.
-I’d love to see an option to simplify a model. If it could somehow detect un-needed polygons, ones that don’t change the surrounding polygons by a certain percent of angle when deleted (or something like that) that would be awesome. Wishful thinking…

well we all learned our lessons of this kind or other
so:just as xzevlin stated
do back ups at different stages… i do that quite often and it really helps ´cause sometimes it goes fine but at a certain stage you decide to do something you later regred…thanks to the backups you can just go back open the file and develop your idea in a different way.

#17

I used to do that in nendo and with wings as well. I learned to use the auto incrimenting saver in wings. it will result in lots of numbered files but when you accidentally smooth a file or get in a bind it is great to be able to go back to an earlier version.
