We’ll have to wait then…
considering a divorce after 10 years with Maya, if 2009 isn't spectacular
I’m done with Maya…
Mediocre releases, still bugs in the software, they make me buy it, not announcement or feature list for the new version and I don’t like the splash screen.
That’s it, I’m going back to pencil and paper… no, scratch that, chissel and stone.

ya cuz ICE will solve everyone’s problems with 3D in total. Avid just got themselves a bunch of suckers looking for a “Make cool” button.
I’ve been evaluating XSI, and I loved it until I ran into the fact that you can only graph one material at a time in its render tree. I’m used to graphing like 5 things at once so this may be a deal breaker for me. You can copy/paste materials graphs into the same view, but that seems pretty cumbersome. Maybe they’ll change it with XSI7? It seems like a very arbitrary limitation.
The only other negative I found was that it still uses the old Soft3d style of file management, and not the standard Windows dialogs. As a former Soft3D user I remember how nice it felt to get away from that crap when I switched to Maya. Other than that, just about everything is better, makes Maya feel clunky by comparison. XSI’s subds and MR integration are a dream, and it’s nice to be able to use my hotkeys in any panel without constantly activating the main view.
It’s not a make cool button. But it is a make cool with a lot fewer steps program.
I think you are right I dont think that there has been anything added since its launch. I remember everyone saying when it came out that everyone would start writing and trading the presets and that it was gonna be revolutionary.
To be honest with you I would be hard pressed to find a feature of Maya I use less than paint FX
Not looking for a “make cool” button mate
Just looking for a software that gets better year after year and seems to care about the individual users and not only the big fx companies and their developers
From the few ICE examples i saw , Autodesk should be worried
Obviously not everyone is sleeping on the job
and Paint FX is really a good example to see that …
If you can´t see this i think you found the “make blind” button in Maya
:surprised
Precisely why Autodesk is not worried, it already has the market with big fx companies and developers using Maya. Individual users or small production houses jumping ship wont make a dent in profits, there are plenty of others who take coding seriously and are not swayed by flashy looks or ease of use when they can already handle Maya as is.

Sigh. Those same people that take ‘coding seriously’ will be able to use their knowledge in ICE to do the same jobs faster than someone without coding knowledge - it’s programming visually, with instant feedback of what you’re doing… Anything which allows work to be done to the same or higher standard faster is a big deal in an industry that is run by very hard timeframes.
Reality check: if you have control over purchasing, get whatever app[s] will help get your stuff done more easily. Hats off to anyone who takes the time to properly check out the strenghts and weaknesses of those that are available. If you don’t - make the most of what you’ve got to use and stop whinging.
… but still want to have better tools to improve their workflow and efficiency or not ???
The only problem with paintFX is that I cant use custom meshes for mesh brushes, other than that it is a pretty cool thing and I use it whenever I can. And people propagating visual coding accidentally seems to leave out in their argumentation that coding allows you to do a lot more stuff than creating and connecting nodes and have data flow between them. For example manipulating scenes: find object a /manipulate it /rename it/export its skinning/animation/whatever/import it somewhere else/ and so on. And yeah, those opportunists will say but you can also code in ICE, I can only say great, I can code for any package. So why should I leave my hometown?
And I really wonder what Felix tried to do here:
http://www.vimeo.com/1400523
but from knowing him and seeing how he coded dynamics stuff for XSI when it didn`t have any I guess he knows what crazy thing those rays will be useful for. : )
Dude, the guys that I work with are so good at coding and have been doing it for so long, they can already see the outcome before the play button is pressed and thats before they have loaded a plugin that was written over a year ago so why would they ever want to move over to ICE for when most of our pipelines are built by Maya?
Higher standard? haahahahahhahahahahahahahahahaha what makes it higher in standard? The render?
So Autodesk should just stop doing new versions for Maya right ? What´s the point ? Your friends can do it all …
YES! I wish they would!.. well that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I would MUCH rather they bought out a version that fixed all existing bugs than one that added any new features…
Im all for product development! :applause:Come on everrybody, put your brains together and lets build a monster.
Im so looking forward to 2009 i have no idea what to expect but I know that you cant please everybody all the time.
keep learning.
