Concept Car (WIP)

This is the first time I have tired to create a concept car and need a little help with this WIP. I am at the stage where I am about to work on the doors and do not have a clue on how I am going to work it. I was going to try to stencil them in because they do not follow the meshes linesā€“but I would have to freeze the mesh and I am not sure I am ready for that yet.

Any advice on how to tackle this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Its not a bad idea to copy your file before you decide to freeze your model so either copy the car into a new layer or better still save a copy as.

Then you can experiment without fear.

I had a similar problem when I was doing my own concept car a few years ago. I wanted to keep playing with the design as I went. But as you may have realised, there is a point when you have to lock the design down and that time is now.

I got around my problem by finalising a design sketch before continuing.

Back then I used the freeze and stencil technique but now I go strictly with sub-ds all the way, so its even more important to finalise the design to get the flow of polys right. You may also find it easier to build the car in parts just as a real car is made of parts.

Why not use edge slice to cut you door into the model? itā€™s probably cleaner than using stencil and doesnā€™t require you to freeze the model.

A quick questions about using and the edge sliceā€¦
Maybe I am doing something wrong here but how do you go about cutting diagonally on the mesh and create a clean line in sub-d mode? I can cut, but it is not straight when I go sub-d.

Or do I have to rework the mesh manually and match the lines(edge) to the flow of the door?

Here is a render testā€¦ I will be going for some kind of grundge look when Its more complete. The doors are still giving me trouble as you can see they still are not implemented. I am still trying to re-work the mesh to fit. Again, any suggestions would be appreciated.

well theres few ways to control the mesh

  • in a early stage of modelling u should block out the parts and afther that detail it out (easier)

  • change the flow of the mesh with spin quads, cuting, deleting etc (harder)

from ur picture I sould try with spin to get a good flow and afther that rework a mesh a little bit :slight_smile:

it is very important 2 examine the mesh before u start modelling how ur mesh would look like in wire

As far as spinning quadsā€¦ This is something I never fully understood-looks like I will have to do some research in this area. Any advise on where to beginā€¦?
