Conan's lifestyle is catching up with him

I had some time so I decided to do this drawing challenge on a form. I’m not going to make the deadline. I’m having issues with it. Mostly the arm in back. So I thought why not post it here and get some opinions.

This the first and second round.

a little tighter pencil

I fixed the mouth and forehead

#3

Here’s what I came up with. Spent most of my time on the face. Took about 4 hours to get it to this point.

#4

I was told the mole under the eye doesn’t look right. so I took it out.

#5

So this was rejected. So…the powers that be maybe you should comment on this. ( that would be nice). I’ve been illustrating for a long time…I can take a Critique.

#6

You ever rush through something and like one part of the art so much that you are blind to other areas?

#7

Ok, Now that have some free time away from being a wrist for the corporate world. Back to this. I think I can save the head? I’m redoing the body.

#8

I have a couple free days, so I thought I would take another go at it. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

This looks really good. I like the new one when you see the arm more. That really adds to the pose. I think this can become a really good illustration. Some ideas I can give you is to try to tell us more about the character by adding attributes such as a necklace of bones or maybe instead of a normal ring in the ear you can add an aztec ring just something with a little richer history, which will give your character illustration much more depth. I also think that the ear maybe is too small. Maybe you can make his ear really big. Looking forward to see the progress.

Thanks for the feedback. good ideas! I’ll have to implement them.I was going to put on an arm guard also but I was liking the forearm. As for the ear. I was thinking he has ape like traits, Cro-Magnon…small ears.

#11

Why are you cropping the tip of the sword off, and cutting in so close to him? It makes the whole piece feel like a thumbnail or preview, not a whole composition.

#12

Another issue is your anatomy - you can use/abuse a certain amount of artistic license with muscles, but you have bulges where there should be none, and it’s hard to work out the lower body, in terms of what part is what. He doesn’t look human, to be honest.

#13

I was seeing it more as a portrait with the arm’s, back and sword as more of a frame for the face. I also like the idea of the viewers imagination filling in the rest of the scene.

#14

I do have a problem with the back. I don’t think it’s “bulges where there should be none”? I think it’s more about size relationship and lighting.

edit: You know it would bring some credibility to your critics if you had a portfolio here that shows you can draw. You know, kind of if your going to do the talk you should also be able to do the walk… just say’n:)

One issue with anatomy to keep in mind is that not all muscles in the body will be fully flexed to 100% intensity, nor will they all bulge with maximum bulk. Some muscles have more volume than others, while others will bulge less, no matter how hard you work them out–they’re simply flatter in shape. What you tend to do in your image, is to bulk up all the muscles indiscriminately, and that will make the figure look too exaggerated, missing the natural variations we’re supposed to see on a body–even a very muscular one.

Thanks. That makes sence.
