Computer Freezing

#1

Hello All,

I’m having trouble, my computer Freezes while working in for instance 3Dcoat and Cinema4D.
Trying to figure out whether its a memory problem, GPU or something else.
In Cinema when I load in a scene with 1.800 000 verts it simply freezes and then the only way out is to shut down completely, even a restart wont work. The cooling of the GPU then starts to work very hard until I shut it off of course.

I downloaded Furmark to check the Gpu, and the computer freezes the same way just a few seconds after I start a stress-test.
Any advice on how to find out the problem?

Many thanks, Robert

Nvidia Geforce Gtx 580 3 Gig memory

Install a gpu and cpu temperature monitoring app then let us know how hot they get when doing nothing, when rendering and with fur mark

If it freezes with Furmark, then it’s an indication that the gpu has a problem. This bench isolates the gpu and stresses it extremely hard. Or it could be a faulty psu issue, if it can’t deliver the necessary power any more.

The 580 is an old card. Maybe its thermal paste is not effective anymore and it gets really hot.

Did you get any bluescreens or other messages? Usually, the first sign of a faulty gpu is artifacts. Maybe there’s something else that’s causing problems too. Could you mention the rest of the system? Mostly the psu and the case. Have you overclocked your cpu and if you have, what cooler are you using?

One last thing. You should upgrade your RAM to 32gb, imo. It’s better to have a headroom with these apps.

BTW, if you just want to try the easiest, most obvious fix. Open the side panel on your computer and just clean it. All the grey dust from the metal fins of the cpu heatsink and the gpu heatsink. Doing this fully will involve taking them out, but a soft brush can work wonders on a neglected computer.

Taking off the dust of this thread and computer
I used another computer, so did not need this PC for quite a while.
But now i want to use it again.

So I used both Matthew and FatherN’s suggestions.
Taking out the dust did not do it, I then took out the card and inspected the thermal paste, it was not really dry but not the whole surface was completely covered by it. I cleaned everything carefully and applied a new thermal paste.
Unfortunately the problem still exists.

I installed ‘open hardware monitor’ to check the temperatures. when running Marvelous designer in simulate mode, i see the temperature of the video card go up a little, but again the screen shuts down unexpectedly. The Q code on the motherboard shows AA, so i guess windows is still running?

But pressing the reset button on the motherboard, it gives 1long and 3 shorter beeps meaning: ‘no vga detected’

I then hold down the power button of the pc for a while in order to shut it down completely and start it up again.

Then when I open the windows event viewer in order to see what has happened, it gives me: ‘Unable to communicate with the display driver. The application must close’.

Still unsure what is actually happening here, but its a direction allready.

Many thanks for helping guys (even when its a while ago  )

Regards, Robert

Edit: upon further inspection, I tried to approach my harddrive from my laptop and that works fine.
So the problem is indeed something with my display. Of Course I also updated the NVIDEA driver, but that did not help either.

Another quick fix to try, have you swapped the card with another one? Easy if you have another computer or good friend that can let you borrow his GPU.

Thanks a lot Patrick,

Yes I indeed considered that, but unfortunately… i don’t have anyone around who could help me here.
So I took the plunge and ordered the: Asus Strix GTX 1060 O6G Gaming

I am overwhelmed by all the different brands and type’s of the GTX 1060, can anyone commend whether I made the right choice?

Many thanks again…
Regards, Robert

well honestly 1070 would be a bit better choice, it is still best buy / perf ration out there so…

Thank you for answering, very much appreciated
What would I miss out with this card compared to the 1070 when I use it with C4D or After effects?
Is it speed or more?

Kind regards, Robert

a bit of speed and also difference in VRAM size, but then again if 1060 works for you then no worries
