Computer config for CG ?

#1

Hi there,

I’m currently working at home on my personal computer and, for now, I have this config: I7 - 2700K, ram 8 Go, Quadro pny 600, and 450W supply.
For 3D, I’m working more and more with real time rendering with softwares like Marmoset Toolbag so as to avoid the looong traditional renderings which are a pain in the ass with only one PC… I’m also interested in the Allegorithmic softwares but my actual config can’t bear it for long, and I tried the trial version of Mari but it was clearly impossible to work.

So I decided, at first, to change my graphic card. I thought of the MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4G which is interesting regarding it’s price. Is that a judicious choice knowing I’ll use it mostly for work?

I’m aware I’ll probably have to change my power supply too but I don’t know which is the best in term of power. Have you any advices or links to help me choose?
Thanks by adavance!

Yes, the card seems a good choice.
For PSU, an 80+ gold rated power supply of 550w would be a good choice without being hugely expensive.
Seasonic, Superflower, Antec are a few good manufacturers.

Been using the GTX 970 (EVGA) for several months now and highly recommend it.

550W is the rated minimum for that card - if you upgrade your PS go high to avoid having to do so again with future upgrades if necessary. I recommend at least 750W.
