combine vue6 with vray

#1

hello,

does anyone know a good way to combine the vue environment with vray rendered scene…

for ex: I am now working on an architectural presentation and I need to make an outdoor scene with some buidings in a big park. I have the best of both worlds : vray for great GI and vue6 for vegetation… but I do not know how to combine them perfectly.

I know in theory that I should render the vray scene with z, g and alpha passes then export the camera in vue and render there with bassicaly the same options, or if you use vue xstream then switch to mental ray and render in max, and then combine the two in ae or combustion…

The thing is that is not that easy :),

One methot I’ve tried is this (max9 with vue6 xstream):
I’ve prepared the scene … put the buildings and stuff… an I’ve rendered them with vray without the vegetation, then switch to vue and made the vegetation, went back to max and switch to mental ray because vuexstream does not support vray :). I made the buildings pink and I’ve rendered the scene with vegetation and pink buildings. After that I went in after effects and keyed the pink color and replaced it with the vray scene of the buildings. It was not that good. I did not have the reflections of the vegetation on the buldings, the layers were offset…

If anyone knows a safe methot on how to combine the two it will be great. I’m bassically interested in the preproduction of the scene and in the compositing part. And please do not tell me to use mental ray for the whole scene because I cannot… workflow issues.

Thanx.

Vray is just not supported yet. The only suggestion I can make is to render the Max pass with billboard trees hidden from the camera for reflections. Not a great solution, but it does work in a pinch. Also, if there are not a ton of trees you could export them from vue and at least get the reflections and shadows from them in Max.

Regards,
Mike

mental ray is as powerful as v-ray – i’m just taking the time to learn the ins and outs of mental ray…

you might be able to do something by baking textures. if anyone wants to play around with this idea… i’m trying to find a faster workflow in doing animations-- final gather takes an obscene amount of time to render.

hi, best option is to export vraycam and vraysun data through vraysync utility in max. then you can syncronize the sun and cam by importing this generated file in vue, and by doing this you will match sun and camera in vue. then you can render passes and compose in photoshop or other 2d software. Good luck!

#5

Can you explain how to use the vray sync feature in max ?

#6

Shure, first you have to to install the syncro plugins for the software ie: max9 x64
just copy “VueSynch.dlu” into the “\plugins” directory of 3ds max. Then open your scene in max with vray renderer, go to utilities panel, click “more” and scroll to VueSynch, selecto your vraysun and vraycam, press export synchro data, save the file.
in vue go to animation menu/import synchronization data, load the file. Then select sun, go to aspect panel, and deselct point at camera, after doing that go to animation panel and in motion rollout select synchronized, and synchronize with vraysun, same with the camera, and it shoud take the info from synchro file!!!

Hi Pedro

Thankyou very much for your reply but I cannot find the vuesync file anywhere. I have looked on the Max 9 disc and cannot find anything todo with it there either.

Where can I find it ?

#8

Actually, I have found it !

Ok, I have had a chance to look at this and a number of things are evident;

  1. When I Sync the Vue sun to the Vray imported data - the Vue sun drops below the ground

  2. When I try to apply it to the camera - there is no option to syncronise

  3. My Vray camera which was animated in max then animates the sun

My units in Max are in metres but my units in Vue are also metres

Any ideas what I am doing wrong ?

#10

o yes, before you synchronize camera you have to disable non switchable camera under animation panel in vue, then switch to motion/synchro-

#11

Hi Pedro

Why do you think the Vue camera drops below the ground ?

Have you ever got the Vray Sync to work ?

#12

in the animation panes you will see an icon of a directors chair, wich its turned on, click to turn off and then synchro it choosing syncronized from the rollout in animation panel, choose to syncho vraycam with vue camera, vraysun with vue sun. it works for me, chech that the version of your vuesynch file is the right one for your max version-

#13

Hi Pedro

I have installed the max synch dll’s into max so that I can synch a max camera and sun.

Strangely, the max camera syncs fine but the max sun still drops below the ground ???

very odd
