color map vs uv map

#1

Hello all,

I’m breaking into the cgd field and came across two concepts that I don’t understand how they correlate.

What is the difference between a color map and a uv map?

Sorry if this question is silly but I can’t seem to find the answer and can’t search the forum because I always get an error.

Thank you in advance.

UV Map - basically your 3d object unwrapped into a 2d representation so that later you can texture. Normally looks like a black and white grid or spiderweb.
Colour Map - or diffuse map is what you’ve painted in 2d to cover the 3d object using the UV map as a guide so that you can see what part of the 3d object you’re painting onto.
There are also other various types of texture related maps such as bump, specular, opacity/transparency, normal, displacement etc…

So with the color map I’m adding general color and width the uv map I’m making the model look with ups and downs without affecting the real shape of it.

Is this it?

Not sure what you mean by ‘ups and downs’ but you’re not affecting the actual object when playing around with the UV map, but whatever texture you apply to the object will be affected by UV map.
Basically if you have a bad UV map (if your UVs are not laid out correctly) then your texture will generally be distorted in areas.
Search ‘basics of creating UV maps’ in google for some more information on UVs.

This is a UVMap (unwrapped mesh) A colour map is when you apply colour to it to give your mesh colour.
