Coaty Anne: realistic female

#1

Coaty Anne was never going to be more than the model of a head, but I’ve decided to finish her. My overly cartoony demoreel desperately needs a realistic model on it. My goal is to get into film, so I invite any critiques that can help me make this better toward that end. Please, have at it, no mercy!

hey requiem,

looking good, at least from this angle. other angles might betray some anatomical problems.

your approach on the hair is one that I haven’t seen before. it looks nice in solid-shade mode, at least. definitely well done though. still, it seems like it might give more of that cartoony feel that you were trying to escape from.

#3

Yep she looks pretty. I’ll keep an eye on this one.

sorry for OT (besides that the model is sweet and what not):
cool to see another cg artist, who’s also a dj ;D and who’s playing house! keep up the funk!

#5

great character. Nothing to crit (i’m not an anatomy specialist) but i will follow it.

#6

really great model. Looks attractive  Hope to see more!

#7

very good work … i like it particularly the face and the arms.

I would work still on the breast. Do you want to animate it? At enought edge on the eyearea and you have no problems with closed eyes.
Keep up the good work !

Thanks for the crits everyone. I’ll post an update soon. I’m working through the back right now.

stuh505: Good call, I’ll post a few more views next update. The hair… cg hair… yeah, it’s been giving me grief. At the moment I don’t have a hair plugin. This is sort of my option right now. I don’t plan on texturing this, but I may drop a bump map on the planes to try and make it look a bit better.

DDS: thanks for the encouragement

flow3d: Hey man, always great to meet another cg dj! I usually spin galleries and at parties for a larger studio, but no residency yet. How about you?

authentic: Thanks man, kind words.

jjcoolio: Attractive is good! Hopefully that means I’m going in the right direction. Thanks.

vaio: good call on the breasts. I noticed last night that they were too far apart. The girl in my reference image had her arms out to either side, spreading them out too far. I moved them closer together, and I’ll finish detailing them. A skin was put on just the head and the eyes seemed to deform well enough, so I think I may be covered there. Thanks for the crits.

Nice model. Can you post in other angle? I hhope to see more

Here’s some updates. I’ve been struggling with the stomach (my old nemesis) but I think I’ve gotten it to something recognizable. If anything looks funny though, please let me know. I need some fresh eyes on it.

alancamara: thanks for your kind words. I hope to hear some crits from you. I’ve seen your stuff in the topology thread and I respect your skill.

Looking really nice as usual, Jason! I’m going to keep my eye on this one.

I know you like to work as light as possible, but the breasts are looking a little faceted on your smoothed model. Might want to add a couple more lines radiating out from the nipple, but it’s arguable. You’ve also got a couple of what I like to call ‘diamond’ polygons in the armpit, which might be a problem down the road.

The stomach and back so far are looking great. I see that you’re working beyond quads (you’ve earned the right to, imo!), which makes it harder for me to critique, but from what I can see on your smoothed model, things seem to be flowing and working out well here. Can you render out a version of the smoothed model with a standard blinn shader? I find that maya’s default setting blinn really shows off topology the best.

Of course the arms and head look amazing. Overall she’s turning out to be a real beauty. Post more, and post often!

hey requiem, great progress. i love the arms especially the elbow and i think that flowing those masses does indeed work better than my sculpt. i like the detail work on the back and i know how hard it is to differentiate all the masses, so props to you. my only real concern is that the line of her scapula looks a little too straight and artificial. other than that i’m impressed. keep up the work.

I finally landed a job in film! Ironically, I’ll probably be modeling cartoony characters. Go figure!

Anyway, here’s the latest on coaty anne. The lack of updates hasn’t been due to slacking on the model, just due to an obsessive re-tooling of the geometry. I’ve been moving toward a much cleaner polyflow. The most extreme re-working has been in the back. I’ve also focused on adding fat, specifically in the arms. The rib cage has been dropped lower and the stomach has been flushed out.

Eric: thanks for the thorough critiques. I still havn’t gotten to addressing all of them, but I will. Again, I’ve made an effort toward a cleaner polyflow so please let me know if you think this is working better.

Cleveland: Thanks for the kind words. Your girl turned out fantastic btw! I’ve re-tooled the scapula. Please let me know what you think of this version.

kicking ass while hardly trying eh?
super-gratz on the job!

nah Im just a bedroom dj, playing funky house and some techno
we gotta play some mixes for eachother some day, screw this 3d mumbo jumbo!

Respect man!!

You’ve really captured a ‘caracter’ for her. Even though she’s not textured she seems warm and inviting.

Good luck with the new job!

Nice work!

The back does look much cleaner. To me the elbow seems a little leaner than the rest of the model…that’s just me and I’m not an expert on anatomy at all so take it for what’s it’s worth…
I’m currently working on a model of my fiancée and there are some good ideas here…Personally I like the hair and I may do something similar to her’s. Keep up the good work.

NICE update Jason. Topology is looking really clean. Couple things that stand out to me right now. (You’re the anatomy guy here, so take these with a grain of salt)

  • Her butt is sort of looking squarish and “long” in the Y axis. Maybe give the cheeks some more gravity at their lowest point, more of a ‘C’ type curve.
  • Her arms are looking a little large to me now that I am looking at more of the entire body. Not in muscle mass, just overall scale and proportion.
  • Her breasts (again, now that we see more of overall body) are looking a little small in diameter. So, not actual cup size, but in the Y and X axis (if we are looking straight on). I’m getting this because there appears to be too much space between them, although it could just be the camera’s perspective.
  • I really like the way you’ve handled poly flow on her tummy, although there is a spot above her love handles where a vert is being shared by six faces. maybe insert another row of 'gons wrapping around to the back to solve this?

Can’t wait to see more. You’re a mad man.

the back really looks great now. i’m impressed. but you’ve got a get a move on. when work sets in you’ll never get her finished. and i want to see her finished. oh, and i’ve got my girl sitting down now…

all the best,

cleveland
