Is it possible to point-click-and-drag a vertex in Wings in the same way as the drag tool in LightWave (i do not want to click to select the vertex first, then press D and then drag it). If not, I guess I have to reset my mind to a different workflow
Click-dragging points?
It’s called tweak.
Tools > Tweak
First think I suggust is highlighting it in the menu > Press [Insert] key and assign it to a hot key, like [t]!
//negative9//
Also, if you have smart highlighting checked in the prefs,
you can click and drag verts, edges and faces as well
And don’t forget to hit 1 after entering tweak to check the magnet,
- and - changes the influence (blue thing) and 234 changes magnet modes.
Have fun!
Also - not the same as tweak, but you might also be interested -
Edit | Advanced prefs -> Use highlight as Temp. Seln. … tick this option.
With this (option) ticked and commands assigned to hotkeys - it’s then possible to apply various commands by just highlighting (not actually selecting with a L.click) a single v/e/f and pressing the appropriate hotkey.
This can also be used in conjunction with D (repeat last command) or Shift + D (repeat lc with drag).
Eg - say you have MoveXYZ, Rotate, Scale, Extrude etc on h.keys - you could then -
Highlight a face
Press rotate hkey (and drag as required)
highlight another face
Press D (and rotate this… )
etc

Edit
If you don’t have a command on a hkey, you can (temporarily) assign it to be a default command (see help info) - this will also work with the temp highlight system
