Cintiq Drawing Feels Wierd Still

#1

I’ve been using a cintiq everyday for about 4 years now and I still find it strange to draw/paint with. Obviously its not anywhere near as good as traditional paper and pencil but I wantd to know if any of you out there feel the same and have found a solution to making it feel comfortable to use? Me personally I’ve I tried changing nibs, buying an ergotron arm for it, and even tried a screen protector for texture but it still feels like drawing on slippery thick glass to me. I wonder if its just a mindset thing.

Have you tried experimenting with the tablet settings such as pressure sensitivity curve, as well as various brush settings in the art software you use?

Hello, Robert. I’ve always been a fan of your work man. Thanks for replying. I actually did try messing with tablet settings, including third party plugins for pressure sensitivity. I feel like I’ve become like a guru of photoshop brush settings now because I’ve played with them for so long yet still something innate with the hardware keeps me from feeling satisfied with the feel of drawing/painting on a cintiq. Again it could simply be a mental thing because I don’t get the exact “closeness of paper” where as a cintiq theres some centimeters away from the cursor and my hand, and it feels slippery.

Thanks, Corey.

Besides changing nibs, some people put a piece of paper on a tablet’s surface, but that’s not going to work for the Cintiq. Personally, I never liked the Cintiq and preferred a regular tablet, since it gives me more freedom ergonomically, and there’s no hand on the screen blocking part of the image as I work.

You’re never going to get the same feel with a tablet/screen as you would with analog tools, or at least not until they invent some new technology that can reproduce the tactile feel. I think if they experimented with some kind of textured surface for the tablet, it could be much better than simply texturing the nibs. But texturing the screen of Cintiq would compromise the visibility, so…
