Cigar Still Life

#1

I haven’t seen many (any?) posts of people using Povray as the tool of choice. Of course it’s much harder to work with since it lacks a wire-frame ability but for some of us staving artists a freeware ray-tracer is the basically the only game in town.

I am now offering up one of my own (I’m no pro so be nice) attempts at a CG image done completely in Povray. I made a version that was 5200x3500 to make a poster and the thing took over 5 months to render!

Oh well, here goes…

Cigar still-life

For 5 months your computer did nothing but render this image? You’ve gotta be kidding me. Well, the image looks great. I’d make a joke about how the reflections are a little too strong but that wouldn’t be funny considereing your re-render time (and they aren’t too strong). I’ve seen a few POVerty Rayers around here… maybe once every 5 months. Just kidding, theyre around.

So, you’ve decided to post your image here, rather than at our newsgroups?! Shame on you!

Five months, eh? What sort of CPU do you have, and how much RAM? How much RAM was needed for the photon-lighting and the image-maps?

That aside, without know the actual CPU doing the number crunching on this one, I can hadly believe that it took 5 months, even with that resolution. I’d guess some clean-up on the CSG code might do some wonders, but I don’t want to crit the source (as I don’t know it), just trying to be helpful and give some advice for enhancements.

The image itself looks fine, though there is pretty little to see in the scene. But it’s a nice composition, I like the simplicity of the pic. Good work on the isosurface for the cigar, but I would have brightened the glowing ring a little more, seems more like a yellow color than an actual heat-glow.

Keep up the good work!

Regards,
Tim

5 MONTHS??? djeez
How long does it take to render the same image at say 800*600?

It’s a nice image though, I like the glass.
Nice concept, a cigar, a good book, some liquor and glasses … all very distinguished items. In combination with the expensive looking wood used on the table it’s a good setup.

but really, 5 months? djeez :argh:

Nice image and ashes, but man you need to learn to tweak the render settings. This image should not take more than a few hours to render even at that resolution. Did it really take 5 months non-stop rendering or maybe you mean that the scene was built and rendered in 5 months?

nice image. i like the composition and the ashes. i’m thinkin that the orange glow should really be a glow and mabey emit light.

Although it seems minor, considering it took 5 months to see the final product, but theres just something about the ashes from the cigar thats bothering me. I’m sure it can be adjusted in some of the render and/or texture settings. But i dont think its serious enough to wait another year or so for a new render

everything is perfect and excellent.

but one thing bothers me. The smoke. It just doesnt look real i guess

Nice still life, I like the mood, nice and warm colors. The ashes look too hard.

And Blender is free, and it is everything Povray is and more, a whole lot more.

The image looks great, the problem is Cigars don’t drop ash like that unless someone where to push in into the ashtray to snuff it out (frowned upon behavior) Ash tends to drop in large cylindracial peices, not small piles.

Wow, i really hope you have a weak computer. 5 months to render this is insane, seriously…thats almost half a year for one frame. It does convey a really nice mood, I dislike the ashes…they seem plastic. Other than that it looks great, either way i don’t think you can afford to change it

The geometry of the ash looks good. But the shader of it seems to be a bit too shiny to me. Also the refractions of the glas are a bit confusing. Try to add some absorbtion to the glas.

Thanks for the comments!

Yes it really did take 5 months to render. The computer is a lowly 750 Mhz. It wasn’t only processing that image ( I use it for other things at ther same time) but it is very slow. The glass really drug it down, but it was running the entire time. Only stopped during power outages. I didn’t keep track of the ram used. The computer has 512 total.

I think I did post it on the povray newsgroups but it may have been a while back. I haven’t really seen much Povray artwork here.

The ashes were created via a heightfeild within povray (both on the cigar and in the ashtray.) I’m sure they could be improved on but I don’t want to wait another 5 months to make it poster size again.
