I never illustrated any children’s books, but I think my M&S entry would qualify for this topic.
First I sketched it with pencil on paper, scanned it and coloured in Photoshop using a Wacom.
Don’t really know how much time this took exactly, but I worked on it quite often during a period of 2 months.
I had a hard time painting the robot cause I never painted anything like it before,the process however was great cause it was for the challenge and a lot of people were watching and giving nice and usefull feedback.
Before the challenge I was working on a piece about the tea party from Alice in wonderland, but I stopped working on it when I entered the challenge, haven’t worked on it since.
I used the same technique as described above and it took me about 2 weeks I guess.
Anyway here’s the latest version of the WIP:
Wow, coolness! Your M&S entry is hilarious, and I really like the direction you’re headed in with the second piece ~ definitely continue to work on it!
I do think that the rendering could be a bit tighter on both pieces. I know how much effort it must take to get them to level at which they’re at right now, but I feel that they could be rendered even more tightly for that illusionistic effect.
Also, you might want to soften some of your edges. They seem a bit to have the same consistency and feel, and what’s nice about the painting medium (digital here) is that you can do so much in terms of varying soft and hard edges. I tend to go TOO blurry in my images (just a personal preference, I guess), but I think in your pieces, some of the items which are farther back in the picture plane could stand to be blurred a bit, and given an atmospheric (bluish) hue.

Special thanks to Rudeone! If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have found this place And of course thanks to Rebeccak for creating this cool thread.
I used Painter IX (trial lol, I have 17 days left) for the entire project and my wacom intuos 2. So far it took me about 18 hrs to make and it still needs some work. My main process just involves using many layers to stay organized.
I’ve always thought about making illustrations for children’s books, but never saw the pathway there. So this entry is a personal reward for me

OK … Rebecca threw me the gauntlet and smacked me in the face really hard. Ouch!
I don’t need 2 weeks unless I want to add a background to this.

Photoshop: 4 hours (maybe a bit longer … lost track of time)
I started this with a quick gesture drawing I did in PS with the default charcoal flat brush. Then cleaned up my line drawing using a standard round brush. From there it was just paint, paint, paint. The shirt is actually a blown up photo of some guy’s ugly shirt that I found on the net. I painted over this layer to add shadows that fit my character rather than the dorky guy in the pic that I used.
Eventually I dumped the line layer after I had all the colors down. Flipped the whole thing because it just looked better this way. Finally, because I kept the character’s skin on a seperate layer I was able to easily desaturate him when I was done. Tada!
