I’m working on a stage backdrop for my boss. It is supposed to be a charles dickens type scene. Please give me C & C to help me improve as I go. Thanks!

Charles Dickens Street Scene
Hey! I love that. It kinda reminds me of monkey Island 1-3
great game, love the style. I love the kind of scene that you’re doing and I think you’re doing a great job. However, the walls of the buildings closest to the camera look kind of plain. Maybe add some windows to that side or something. It looks too fake.
Now, about the snow… I think it should either be fixed(it doesn’t look realistic), or it should be removed. Frankly, I’d remove it, but it would certainly look good with more snow on the sidewalks, less in the middle of the road, and more in the rooftops and the little window indentations.
Keep up the good work!
I like the feel of the street. When you say it will be used as a backdrop, I would agree with the last post about adding some detail to the buildings nearest the camera (at an angle) as well as some of the buildings at the end of the street.
I really like the feeling of this one. If you are going to add snow, think about how it would be at the time period. Probably some lines going down the street from carriages, etc.
The other thing that I just noticed is the sidewalks… is there really enough room for people to walk? For example, on the left side, look how close the stairs come to the light post; there should be a little more room I think. Maybe moving the lightposts closer to the street, or making the sidewalks a little wider.
I am looking forward to the updates on this one, I think it will come out real nice!
Very beautiful job! Fits very well with Charles Dickens stories. You will put characters in the scene?

hi,
I think your scene is too bright, the shadows are too soft, maybe darken the light (what is your light setup?) and add a yellow tint, this may bring a mood about your scene…
I love your scene and what you’ve done with the street! However, the snow in the sidewalks still don’t look quite right. But you’re doing great and I’m sure you’ll get it right soon. However, I agree with the last post. The lighting is too bright and doesn’t fit with the dark sky. Make it darker.
Also, are you planning to add bump maps to your buildings, maybe make the buildings look a little more realistic. But, to tell you the truth I preferred the first pictures of the building. These textures make the scene look like you’re trying to go for a REALLY photorealistic look. I think you should just photoshop some cartoony bricks.
dude ur making some fine progress, keep at it.
I agree that the lightng can be toned down but im sure you’ve yet to finalise the lighting.
Keep at it.
Update:
I’ve worked on texturing more of the buildings and adjusted the lighting. Thanks for all the replies. You’ll have to understand that some of the design decisions are not being made entirely by me. That is an unfortunate side effect to getting paid for a job

Hey, I like the update. Textures look good. I am enjoying following your work ![]()
I think there may be a lighting artifact around the bottom left window (closest to the camera)? I like the brick textures alot.
Keep it up!
Wow, that’s looking great. It has a real Dickens-y feel (if that’s a real adjective). I don’t really see anything wrong with it yet, but I’ll keep watching :D. Naw, I’m sure it’ll look good. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for all your comments so far. I’m taking them all into consideration. You guys have been really helpful. Heres a small update. Which do you guys like better? I prefer the second image.

I like them both… nice addition of reflection to the sidewalk.
The first is more of a “realistic” render, and the second seems more “fantasy” to me because of the soft lighting… I think it depends on what it will be used as a backdrop for. What will it be used as a backdrop for??
Its a back drop for a local Christmas event put on by a church. Basically you ride an old steam engine through a sort of “Winter Wonderland” for lack of a better term. The train will stop here at this stage and there will be singers dressed in period clothing singing christmas carols from the street and the windows. The back drop is going to be extended in real 3d elements onto the stage with some more buildings in which people will be able to climb into so they can sing from the windows. Well that was sort of a jumbled and confusing spew of words on my part but maybe you get the picture.
In that case, I like the second one. It has more of a “Winter Wonderland” kind of feel… I wonder what other people think…
it may too late in the game…but it looks like in the right foreground is a small shop. I thought it would add detail and an interesting focal point to add like a hanging shop sign there over that shop in the foreground. I mean if it is a business they would have a sign…oh and I really like the “christmas glow” of the second image too, very warm and inviting.
