Character Rig/Anim reel

#161

Dogbite, the non-roll setup is a very simple question, based on the locking of the rotation around the “twist” axis for the joints (the sleeve ones in this case). This way the shoulder area does not roll and the mesh does not suffer any twisting. The difficult part lies in avoiding Gimble-lock. And I’ll try to put some wires this weekend.

Solomon, the tie actually IS cloth simulation (driven by the cool Maya nCloth system) but you can also animate it by hand and blend between the two approaches at any moment.

HenningK, I would like to say that all that cool stuff has been invented by me, hehe, but this is not the case at all. The space-switching has been being used for many riggers for a long time, and the sticky-lips concept I think I see it for the first time in a paper from Blue Sky’s TD Mark Piretti in… 2002 or something like this.

Cheers!!

Very nice. Has anyone else watched it like 5 times while constantly pausing it? Another thread with a more detailed discussion of the businessman would be awesome :buttrock:

#163

really amazing rigging reel
It must be really fun to be animated.
Cool:thumbsup:

#164

oh, and here i was trying to think of a complex way.
so basicly what youre saying is the from a certain angle the bones for the sleeve stop rotating but the handle keeps rotating the rest of the chain.

#165

As a Character TD, I have to say really nice reel, one of the best I saw.

Congratulations.

Buen trabajo

Everything I wanted to say is already told in this thread, First when I downloaded the video I never expected such a good Rigging Job! As somebody already said: “a dream for an animator”, Keep the good Job my friend, I envy your skills :applause:

#167

awesome!
its been 2 years since ive done my last character rig…but that would have been the character rig of my dreams!

#168

Purely Joyful to watch. Excellence. Great Job Victor. Kudos.

#169

That was awesome especially the elephant stuff!!! WOW! Amazing…

and hey is that music by Explosins in the Sky?

#170

This reel is like 10 cilos of pure Plumbum in my mouth - yaw-dropping!

I loved just to WATCH it

#171

Grerat stuff. I’m intrusted in the way you switched your space switching. That little menu how did you integrade that in to the rig? I figure it was a right click option? If so is that a proprietery tool? And can you elaborate a little on it?

#172

wow this does look awesome. Good stuff man! I’m not animator but seems like I could end up with some cool stuff with such a rig.

#173

Dogbite, as you say, the joints for the shoulder don’t rotate on their longitudinal axis, but do follow the position of the rest of the chain.
Nottoshabi, for the space switching I’m using a mel script attached to a standard maya RightMouseButton menu. There’s no 3rd parties tools here, and it’s quite easy to do it, since is all explained in the manuals.
And for those who asked, here there are a couple of wire images. The one below shows the smoothed mesh ready to render. Hope you liked it!

Yet more motivation to get a 4 day work week.

Making the animators squeal. Very inspiring to this rigger / wannabe animator.

I’m jealous of any animator that gets the opportunity to animate on your rigs. The controls were everything i ever wanted and want now that i’ve seen them on your rig. Congrats, really amazing work.
