awesome man ill defiantly be following!Ive been skating for around the same amount. But i hate winter, there arnt to many indoor parks near me. Good luck with the business too and keep working on that Canadian accent haha
Character in environment : Skateboarder
wow, that board looks amazing in the render! I think the tail/nose are a little thin… or if it was worn, it would be more angular as the trail is slid across the ground. Actually, if you didn’t do that, I think you should. Just because when you do ollie/kickflip/ect and snap the tail/nose down the friction scrapes off some paint and wears down the wood (yes I skate… hence the name lol)
But still awesome job so far, nothing else really caught my attention, can’t wait for more.
Canadian boy : Right! winter sucks for skating :). and there isn’t many indoor places close.
kickflipdude: Thanks!, Glad you like the render. The brief was to create a board that has only been used perhaps 5 or 6 times, the tails would not be so worn by then. Keep in mind that the render shows the portion of the board just a few inches above the trucks, and the wearing wouldn’t occur in that region for quite a while yet.
Nevertheless I’ll be adding more scratches and wear marks to the upcoming renders.
Thanks for the comments and ideas!
Lookin awesome. Working on a skater myself atm not even close to looking as good as even your deck though
Really looking forward to seeing your process especially the rigging since that is the stage im on right now.
bonne: oh great!, i’d like to see your progress.
c0ldf1ame : Thanks!, details are important for this
materials.

Here are some updates.
These are renders of specific parts from the skateboard, used as render tests for the shaders and textures used in the final images.
Loving the work man, keep it up its awesome so far. Your attention to detail is superb, cant wait to see the finished peice ![]()
Damez
wonderful ! ![]()
i like the details soo Much man
… really great WIP :applause:
Enjoy Making it
very nice attention to detail and the textures look great, one question for the scene are you going for a stylized look or realistic?
Wow, that’s great dude! You are keeping the level pretty high
But there are some questions I have:
- How much is there procedural ? Especially on the surface of the board I wonder if it’s just a huge texture or if you mixed it with a procedural material.
- Which renderer is it, you are using ?
Insane details! Can’t wait for the character.
To add to gamePats question, what renderer are you using?
guitarmunkee Hi there, thanks for the compliments, The renderer is as said, good old mental ray. It’s versatile, proven and the results can be fantastic. Time is needed to optimze my render times now, for animation.
gamePat Hi pat, really glad you like the work so far. The board itself is a mix between a lower res map for the dirt, and a procedural shader for the bumps, so close ups are possible. The board itself, on the graphic size is a mix of painted maps, overlays for dirt and scratches, and maps also painted for spec and reflection.
The rendered, is good old mental ray.
younglion Cheers, I’m going with a realisitc look for the final image, Somewhat akin to an action shot in a film.
silvercoin Thanks silvercoin, I am having a lot of fun making it, and XSI is fantastic to use too.
LiQuiD12 Thanks. The finished piece should be completed soon.
I can’t believe how I didn’t see this coming. Your level of detail with the model alone was crazy. Great job making it real. Can’t wait to see how crazy you get with this animation.
hey joseph!
beautyful renders and very, very nice texture work.
looking forward for more.
btw. when can we see some character work?
-r
Great work on the details and textures, looks spot on. Makes me want to create a 3d version of myself since I think its a close as i’ll get to skating with the great british weather as it is.
Keep up the great work and look forward to more updates.
leonlabyk Oh really? Well its certainly a good idea to make a 3d version of yourself. I look forward to animating this once it’s finished. Unfortunately your right the British weather is not really conducive to a good skate. But i’m still managing to get some in. Where are you from?
rasmusW Hiya rasmus , how’s it going? Character work won’t come for 3 weeks now, (see below), but expect a nice big update then.
bbob Great, thanks bbob! here’s some more!
karabo Thanks Karabo
. Cheers for the support
DigitalBlaspheme Thanks!, I’m glad you think it’s looking real. The animation will be fun to do also. The skater model and setup is first though.
Guys,
I’m getting married in 5 days!, So I won’t be around after that as much, for a few days at least :).
After that i’m off on my honeymoon for 3 weeks. So i’ll be semi-inactive during that time. Then right back onto the project.
In the meantime,
2 new images.
