Character in environment : Skateboarder

#1

I’ve started developing work for our company ShineFX’s portfolio.
The first project is a skateboarder character. A fully detailed high
res model,to be used in film and commericals. Progress will be posted
here for comments and ideas. After the modeling and texturing are
completed, the character and board shall be rigged and final renders
done in an action shot.

The focus is on accuracy, detail and great photoreal renders.
The software is XSI and photoshop, zbrush being used for some
details and cloth sculpting.

I hope you enjoy the progress.

The first images of the skateboard.

wow great details so far.

Looking forward for more

#3

amazing technical detail. I’ve modeled about 2-3 skateboards, usually to show others how to do it, but never…not once have I ever thoguht to break the trucks down to the smallest part. Crazy. And I love it lol.

#4

Amazing work so far ! I’d love to see the rest of the character itself !

CodeVeroby :Thanks!, I’ve finished with the board now, and will be posting up the renders of that. In a day or so i’ll begin the main character.

DigitalBlaspheme :Thanks mate!, Glad you came by to look. I wanted this to be photo realistic, so I made all of the details of the board. The final animation will have exploded views of the board, bearings and truck. Thus everything needed to be modeled.

Wow, thats some wicked stuff you have there Joe.
Honestly, if you hadn’t explained that it was a rendering I would have thought it was one of your reference-photos .
Can’t wait to see the full character with the board in a nicely rendered scene.
I wish you and your team all the best. Waiting for more awesome stuff

#7

Hey Joe, its fantastic! really cool stuff, you know its one of the most realistic image. I;m impressed! I think its result of hard work ))

#8

Gamepat : Thanks a lot!, I hope that’s the reaction most people had. Appreciate your input, i’ll most more soon

Greatto: Thanks, the hardest part was the shaders. But they all worked out fine, XSI is fantastic.

#9

hey mate, the rendering looks stunning. i like the damages and aged made in the textures.
and the model looks very detailed too.
did u use any displacements in the textures?
normal mapped or bump mapped?
did u use any photos for the textures?

Cheers

#10

yeah! great render and texture job.
i’ll sure be watching this.

Hey Joe. very nice update!

The texturing got me stoked. Can’t wait to see more! :)…

Keep it up!

#12

Awesome render Joe.
Looks very much like a photo. I’m looking forward to seeing the character for this board.
If the character will be of the same quality as the board you’ll have a great peice!

ciao,
Fred

Frederic L. Thanks a lot mate, hope so too.

JakeJK Cheers Jake!, im glad you like it.

rasmusW Thanks for the support mate

kfc Thanks MFC , there is bump map and some displacement on the trucks and the scratches deep in the truck itself.
I painted most of the textures and used some parts of photos for some scratches here and there.

Cheers

Great looking so far. A few Questions

-Do you skate?!?
-Have you textured the grip tape yet?

What are your plans for the whole scene. Im excited to see how it all works out!

#15

Hi Canadianboy ,

Since I’ve been with my new fiancee from pensylvania people started to say I sound Canadian :S that’s strange. I’m as british as it gets

I do skate, yes. Have done for about 7 years. Some on and off periods, but the last couple of months working freelance allows me to skate every day at least 30 mins - 1 hour, I love that.

The grip tape is all textured, and i’m working on improving the shader now.
Glad you excited, I am too!

The plans for the whole scene are as follows. Set up camera shots that show the board and character in motion during tricks. So picture the legs of skater who just kicked the board out to do a 360 flip. The background would be a street and perhaps an imminent landing in bluntslide on a grind box ( the guy is good  haha ). But seriously there will be a small environment like that.

The idea is to show off the photorealism that ShineFX ( my new business ), can achieve in their models/renders. And how that could be used. So expect shots of the skateboard as a product, but also during action shots. Imagine a skateboarder doing a kick flip, the camera moving underneath the board and the texture changing to each different graphic from the new ‘enjoi’ skateboards range. Same could be done with the wheels, and exploding out the bearings.

I won’t spend time creating the entire advert the brief was designed for, but I will hint towards that direction as possibilities in stills.

Beauty shots of the rider and board will be made too, on a turntable, posed figure image.

Expect some more renders very soon. , Thanks everyone

awesome man ill defiantly be following!Ive been skating for around the same amount. But i hate winter, there arnt to many indoor parks near me. Good luck with the business too and keep working on that Canadian accent haha

#17

wow, that board looks amazing in the render! I think the tail/nose are a little thin… or if it was worn, it would be more angular as the trail is slid across the ground. Actually, if you didn’t do that, I think you should. Just because when you do ollie/kickflip/ect and snap the tail/nose down the friction scrapes off some paint and wears down the wood (yes I skate… hence the name lol)

But still awesome job so far, nothing else really caught my attention, can’t wait for more.

#18

Canadian boy : Right! winter sucks for skating :). and there isn’t many indoor places close.

kickflipdude: Thanks!, Glad you like the render. The brief was to create a board that has only been used perhaps 5 or 6 times, the tails would not be so worn by then. Keep in mind that the render shows the portion of the board just a few inches above the trucks, and the wearing wouldn’t occur in that region for quite a while yet.
Nevertheless I’ll be adding more scratches and wear marks to the upcoming renders.
Thanks for the comments and ideas!

Lookin awesome. Working on a skater myself atm not even close to looking as good as even your deck though :stuck_out_tongue:
Really looking forward to seeing your process especially the rigging since that is the stage im on right now.

omg you modeled the balls in the bearings!! thats awesome, loving the details
