Hey. If your thread don’t get any reply go to a shrink or something.

We are here to learn, maybe some more than others.

My thread have no more than 5 or 6 replies and i’m ok with that, because i’m not expecting anithing from anybody, the only thing I do expect is that everybody do the best on its own thread.

Don’t complain that no one comes and pass the hand on your heads. We are all grown up boys, we know what means to get a NO in our face. :shame:

Instead of wasting your time with discussion, try to make what you want better. :airguitar

whats up guys i’m brand new here, first comp. i can honnestly admit to som c@ck sucking (pascal), only because i have followed his works for a while and think he’s a great artist, when he signed on i had to say i apreciate him as an artist and ask for crits on my beast. rather than get bitter about the star treatment i try to bust my ass to beat these pros. these pros also have alot more to live up to, if they suck or something looks like shit then everybody here is gonna see. the mods do get more hits but i’m cool with that, i just think the better people should give more insight and tips on how there achiving that top quality. life isn’t fair but us little guys gotta show are tenaciousness, and make these pros worry that we will have their jobs soon. the wow and awsome comments are okay but if you have 25 second to type that bullshit look at the persons work and find something to crit.
if its good say why if it sucks say why.

ive got to say its an honor for me (3d loving student) to compete with noxx, pascal, clark, and everyone else for that matter. it will just make me strive for the best.

i spent my 2 cents, so thats my bubblegum wrapper i found my pockets.
EVERYONE:keep doing what it is you do best

Not to throw fuel on this burning stupidity, but what a load of shit. I haven’t ‘been’ here long, but have read a while before, and I’ve seen how things work. There are some valid points in there, but that’s not the way to make them.

Granted, people get replies based on ‘rep’. But it’s usually earned rep, and the way people get a rep is to do good work and not be a jerk…a lot of people ‘know’ each other also from posting in each other’s threads or etc. over time and tend to go check out what their friends or people whose work they admire are doing before people they don’t know, and maybe post to encourage them. While this can lead to threads dropping back that deserve to be looked at, I don’t think this is the popular people’s fault, and I don’t see a need to bitch in this fashion and deride their artistic ability. Saying anyone gets posts because they’re a mod is ridiculous too, because usually someone becomes a mod after they’re known here, or post a lot, so the same thing applies.

There are over 200 entries this time, and it’s nearly impossible to see them all. I do try and make an effort, but it’s ludicrous at this point. I haven’t even had time to work on my own thread (hence it’s on page 80). The same thing happens in the WIP forum, the Gallery forum, etc. there are so many threads and images and people, how can they possibly all get equal attention? The only way I’ve seen threads stay alive and at the top is if a lot of people post in them, or the thread starter updates/replies all the time. The more updates, the more views, the more chance people see it, the more comments, etc. that seems the only way to survive. Because of this huge signal to noise ratio, you tend to gravitate towards people’s threads that you’ve seen before. I really don’t think there’s any way to have some kind of ‘ultra-objective’ hippie commune when there’s human beings involved, people are made to sort things in that fashion automatically. I think you just have to take the whatever-you-consider-good with whatever-you-consider-bad. (‘you’ meaning anyone, not you specifically.) People are strange.

All that said, there are some one-line-gushing-post epidemics at times, but that’s just how it is…unless there’s a huge moderator timesink, I don’t see a way around it. Some of the Wip/Gallery stuff has been royally hosed because of people going back months and posting “that’s cool!!” in 5 star threads that already had hundreds of replies. It makes no sense. But, wtf. As said, the objective is to be entertained, inspired, learn, and why not keep it fun?. People get silly and joke around or are over-enthusiastic, personality comes into play too. I still consider this a ‘serious’ and ‘pro’ forum just the same.

Anyway, it’s probably too early for me to be writing like this, I should have some caffeine, but have seen lots of posts, and lots of posts like this, and figured I’d say my bit. Whatever.

Amen to that H-Cube . . . . couldn’t have said it better myself [as shown by earlier posts:blush:

#29

sorry no time to read anything , but i think life is life ,a spielberg movie is not better then another little movie by mr. that no one know ,but spielberg is know by everyone and have talent,so people go see is movie first,so in 3d its the same thing and in all things why watching something like that when you be sure to look at really interesting thing .

And anyway lildragon make a really good job with the thumb ,its how i check thread ,i check the thumbs and go see what seam interesting i dont care about the name and the function .

and sorry but i think this subject is going nowhere

#30

have to agree with gabe…I also use the wip thumb page for this

it’s just that some people exaggerate with the comments…thats all I wanted to say

#31

Hypercube:  now that’s the opposite of the one-line epidemic hehe. You can write a book about this stuff :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I agree on most things really, exept for the first thing. The point of this thread was, the fact that people with a “rep” get a “Wow that’s great” for modelling a cube or just showing a small scetch.
Which is the thing that’s a bit unfair, unfortantly you can’t change this I think…

And I know it’s stupid to talk about this, but obvieusly it’s on peoples minds. And needs to be discussed about and worked out.

#32

Good point, I should have woken up a bit more first…but then I’d be REALLY long-winded.

Some of the built-in ooh and ahh can be a little overboard…but, I dunno, they’re just kind of anticipating great things…there’s certain people it seems like when they join a challenge they should be accompanied by the imperial march from star wars, it spells impending doom.

Ah well. Mo’ posts, Mo’ problems. Keep on truckin’.

P.S. I think the thumbnail page does help out in here TONS, that’s a good point, and due kudos to Lil’ D…wonder if an auto-thumb system could be worked out for the other forums, once the challenge site’s is figured out.

#33

Yes I agree that a lot of good stuff is getting left in the dust. There are now ~270 entries? Ive read a few threads of people that have just given up because they dont get any feedback.

I myself have had 4 people respond (one was a friend). 7 posts were mine. I even tried giving away money to people responding but it hasnt worked  Maybe i need some boobies on my character! Cudos to Zr0-1 for all his posts, i believe he has replied to everyones thread.

I hope you mods consider making a new structure for the challenge on your new site for the massive popularity that has become of this

#34

Hey this is an interseting thread, people can talk a bit more freely. My only crit, boromir, you’ve only had 3 posts and you want to change the system? people that have been around and contribute on a regualr basis have built up this community and deserve whatever attension they get. Stick around a bit longer and then your opinion will be more valid.

#35

Of course, ZrO-1 is the coolest guy with too much time on his hands here. He is a machine with his posting. If he likes your stuff, take it as a great compliment. He’s probably seen most of them. Notice how it also makes his stuff get looked at by more people. Everyone here really just needs the crit and comments. The OHHS and AHHS are going to happen from time to time. But watch out. A few of us might really come after your work and give it a good working over. I enjoy the crits on my own work and love to help when I can with other people’s stuff.

#36

I know that the next challenge site will be way better… Remember that it started with only 30 guys and now there’s more than 120 people in this one… Yes it`s not always fair, yes it need some revisions…But most of the guys who where on every challenge form the beginning have improved their skills a lot … having experienced guys participating to the challenges add a lot to the motivation I think

#37

The only way I’ve found I can improve my 3d skills is by giving myself a project. These challenges inspire people to become better. Those that give up aren’t doing themselves justice. True, it’s hard for someone to go through and crit every entry, if you did that, you’d never get any work done! So some may get left in the corner for a while to gather a bit of dust. (I myself limit myself to a few comments a day. If I had something faster than a dial-up connection maybe I’d do more!).

Let’s face it, my entry is nowhere near a winner, but it gets a couple of comments now and then, and that motivates me to do better!

I’m just glad this forum exists!

#38

Well here’s my 2 cents on this and I hope it resolves some stuff here so everyone can get back to rockin away on their models

Basically it all really boils down to you get what you give…but not right away.
I know how I would like people to reply to my thread so I try and reply to them as I hope they will reply to mine. Many of the people that have replied on my thread did so after I replied to theirs. It’s natural, if someone gives you a big crit on your thread you naturally want to go see theirs to see if they’re talented or just full of it :D. If you want a crit from someone specific don’t be afraid to ask them. Just be sure to show them the same consideration by posting a constructive crit on their piece at the time you ask for a crit. And with the exception of a freak like me who only needs a few hours of sleep a night (and is currently unemployed) don’t expect a reply back right away. Many people here only come to the forum when they have an update to post which at most might be every other day.

The most important thing is just be sure to reply in a manner that you want to be replied to. If all you do is show up and say “good work” then don’t be pissed if all you get is “good work” back. Even if you like everything you see and can’t imagine how it could be better, tell the person why you like it. What have they done that makes it work so well. * on a side note by doing that you will help yourself also by seeing what works and what doesn’t*

I don’t know it’s just my 2 cents on this. NOW lets get back to work shall we?

#39

uh, haven’t read through all these post… don’t have much time.

what i really reacted to was the whole question about “censoring” ooo ahhh’s and Wow’s… which is just plain old stupid. why wouldn’t anybody on anyone’s thread be allowed to say what they think?
sure, i don’t get much replies either, but i don’t bitch about it.
I’m here to model, and if someone find it cool/aah/wow that’s just good. i mean, take a look at the “view”-thing instead, just because you don’t get a reply don’t mean that no-one’s watching.
art’s art, and that’s it. i mean, it’s like this all over… if you get the chance to take a peek at “mona lisa” compared to a painting by some unknown dude from sweden, well, i’d put my money on the mona lisa… that is, i’d rather look at that, even though someone else did it “better” in shorter time and without hands.
everyone can’t be famous.
and what’s this bs about mod’s and more “famous” artists getting more hits? it’d really twist my mind to see my thread get more hits than, say, pascal. i’m unknown, he’s known… see the difference?

this is not a Competition, we don’t win prices, we don’t get a degree and we sure as hell don’t get women, beer and cigarettes.

just keep modeling, keep your thread at the top, sometime someone will look at it, if that’s what you want. i just want to model.

so, in true celebrity deathmatch spirit…
Let’s get it on!

Ok I read a good chunk of this thread, and I must say, man you peeps complain about everything… heh

You guys ever stop to think the talented artist here deserve their merit, thru busting their balls day in and day out? It never comes easy to anyone and when they get to the point where they’re well known, peeps come down on them, why? I mean it’s not Pascal’s or Matt’s fault they get tons of replies after showing one pic. It’s just that they’ve earned that reputation that allows this…

As for the mod thing that’s bogus…

I’m admin here and when I post my work, I’m targeted very hard, I usually get slapped in the face and my star ratings (tho not important) drop to like 2 at times, it goes with the territory and I can handle that, I know when I work hard on something no one can make me feel bad about it

You all just need to settle down, it’s a big forum, huge range in age groups and there’s not a thing you can do about fanboy posts, how is it possible to stop them? Just roll with the punches, work your arse off and maybe someday it’ll be you in the limelight, let me hear you complain then!

#41

Hear, hear!

I feel that the moderators here are the best I have seen on any board. Most would simply lock a thread and tell everyone to shut the hell up, I have no idea what you are all complaining about. We are all lucky to have such skilled moderators. I am going to school to be an animator, and that takes work, so I know they EARNED whatever status they may have. These people are all very good, so what if they are not better than Pascal or whatever. My dad told me once that there is ALWAYS someone better, and that is why you have to try your best always. Anyway I just want to apologize to the moderators for all the disrespect you are getting, maintaing a board and modeling and everything else you must do is tedious and I am ashamed to be among these disrespectful heathens. -Jeremy- :hmm:

Just found this thread after 3 days offline [gasp!]

Lil after reading through I was about to mention that - sometimes it goes the other way. I must admit I’m excited by the fact Matt and Pascal are on this challenge again, seeing what they do is great, but I don’t think it’ll ever be like the first - where we (crappier) peeps could get responses back - that’s what made it really exciting.

Thanks a bunch for the thumbnails too - can’t wait for the new site.

Anywoo - about the fanboy stuff a quick PM and an addition to the FAQ’s might server beter than deleted posts which P people off like no other. Just somthing like -

"Hey []

I admire your ethusiasm when responding to [], but it would be appriciated if you made your comments with constructive critism in mind. It will help keep the threads more professional and focused.

Thanks,

[]"

A form letter in other words- click pm, click the form and send - nothing to it. Just for those more obtrussive comments - not the simple support.

Well those’re my thoughts,

[I]I don’t have may replies on my challenge thread, and I would hope to get more just for the crits from those artists that I respect on this forum… but I don’t piss and moan about it.

I think the whole concept here is to learn. This is the first challenge I’ve taken part in. I value the crits both good and bad. Obviously, everyone likes an ego stroke with a ‘Wow’, or ‘Amazing’, but I know I prefer actual honest crits.

I can pretty much guarantee you that the mods (when they get time to join the challenges), and strong artists like Pascal, Matt, Fellah, etc… would rather hear honest crits, than pages of ‘praise’.

We’re all here to learn… and even the stronger artists will admit it. I check out their work to guage where I’m at technically and design-wise… and it helps me better my skills. If I have an idea or am really struck by the concept, I’ll voice it, if I don’t I won’t waste their time.

It’s already been said, and I’ll say it again… just because you don’t get crits doesn’t mean your concept is bad, it just means the style you’ve used may not be for everyone.
