Best Diorama__________________________________
Best Diorama - oDDity

ARTIST: oDDity
WIP THREAD:
HARDCORE MODELING: Ray Harryhausen Tribute: Diorama

FINAL ENTRY:
This is the Sinbad/Kali fight scene from The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. Kali was the creature I remembered most from watching those movies as a kid, so that’s why I choose her.
There were two Kali models used in the movies, there was a full sized one which was actually on the set with the actors, and a miniature that was used for the animation.
The full sized one had a lot more detail so I was making a version of that, rather than the miniature.

It’s all Lightwave, with some mudbox sculpting for Sinbad’s clothing. It took a couple of weekends and some weekday evenings.

And the Winner…

Best Overall Entry, Best Render, Most Accurate Creature Representation__________________________________

Best Overall Entry - Monstermaker

ARTIST: Monstermaker
WIP THREAD:
HARDCORE MODELING!: Ray Harryhausen Tribute: Cyclops

I’m going to have to call this done as I have other commitments that I have been ignoring to do this challenge. I just had to do something for this challenge as Ray Harryhausen has been such an influence on my life, as he has been to so many other especially of my generation. The Cyclops from the Seventh Voyage left an indelible mark on me as a child one that has stayed with me to this day so, I chose to recreate it. I worked on this for about two and a half weeks. Working between 6 to 10 hours a day. It would probably have taken less time if I new what I was doing. This is the first time that I have ever modeled a full figure from scratch. I learned a lot and had a blast doing it. I used Modo for the base mesh, created the displacement, bump and color maps in ZBrush rendered in Modo ,and used PhotoShop to composite the renders. I hope you like it.

HARDCORE MODELING CHALLENGE #8: JOHN MCCLANE (DIE HARD-1988) - FULL MODEL

(MY WIP THREAD LINK)

Thank God! I’ve finished the model before the deadline. Actually there are lots to do but i’ve decided very lately to make a full body for this model and most of the model has been done on last ten days on and off. I couldn’t decide about the pose and changed it few times. Then came up with this pose. I don’t have time to get feedback about the pose so i hope you’ll like it. Textures, hair, pose, hands and fine details still need work, so i’ll continue this model on the WIP forums after the challenge.

About the beauty shot,
I’ve worked on the textures and shaders on last 2 days and made the render tests on last day. So i don’t consider the shot as a beauty render exactly =)
Please see the below nontextured renders- which has a better lighting setup- and the turntable to evaluate the model.

It was great to participate this challenge guys. I enjoyed it a lot.
Thanks for the great support and nice comments on my threads. They mean a lot to me.

There are some great entries on the challenge. It will be hard time for voters to pick one of them.
Good luck everyone!

Comments:

After quiting my job, doing boring architectural visualisations (no offence anyone), I decided this challenge is perfect for me to test my 3D skills to the limit. At the start I had a vision of portraying the General in an unconventional way, without the usual lightsabers and fighting poses. I wanted him to appear more human (or alien if you will), than robot. It was my goal to pose him in a way to express his fearless soul and desire for battle, yet at the same time I wanted to show desperation in his intentions…perhaps that is the reason his lightsaber has not been ignited. Ok, I have not slept for days and I am talking utter crap, so to wrap it all up, I had an amazing time taking part in this challenge and I wish everyone good luck tomorrow.

The final model depicts a wildebeest being taken down by a lion. The model is showing them as they are tumbling on the ground after the lion has jumped it during a high speed pursuit.

I really wish I’d had much more time on this, but it was a very fun challenge. I learned alot about Zbrush, anatomy and about sculpting. This was achieved both by trial and error, but also by following the other threads in the challenge. Alot of great work were the outcome of this challenge.
Thank you for your comments everyone and good luck on the next one  I’m really looking forward to it.

I’ve always been somewhat facinated by asian culture so I had to pick the Grand Buddha at Ling Shan. Originally I wanted to take this piece a little bit further but I am happy with the end product. I wanted to bring it to life but with a somewhat stylized look. I didnt really strive for edgeflow on this piece as it being a statue would probably not have to move much, plus sometimes its way more fun to sculpt

COMMENTS

Congrats to everyone that made it!

I’m happy to say…this is my first model that was done entirely in Zbrush, no other app has been used at any point except for photoshop for compositing the beauty render. I could also experiment with hard surfaces. A good learning experience, although mixed with my moving out of India for some time (and partying is necessary), so I only worked a few (5-6) nights on it.

If you are interested on a walkthrough of this character, you can see video recordings of all the work I did on it in the wip thread. So far only the head is ready to watch but I’m planning on finalizing the whole body in a few days. Gotta say I finished half the character last night so the upcoming videos might not be too educational for some people.

COMMENT:

Since I originally planned on doing more than a bust, I figured the arm would probably connect to something (e.g., the rest of his body ). Unfortunately, that didn’t happen so I left it out. I did toy with the idea of including it on the table in my ‘workshop’ video, but it became too cluttered and distracting ( and I also didn’t finish texturing it).

Special thanks to Terry and Richard for their reference material. Original Design by Syd Mead.

Thanks to everyone for their support in the WIP thread and Congrats to everyone that has finished!

Comments:

This is the 2nd time, i’m in a hardcore modelling challenge and i’m quite glad that i was able to do up this piece of work which i intially wanted to try out during hcm09-starwars tribute. While C3po was mainly a good test of my subdivisional modelling skills, R2d2 was alittle bit more hardsurface. Based on a concept art and some reference from toys, i needed to guess some of the finer details that were missing or vague.

I’m quite glad that i managed to do up the texturing of r2d2 with my limited knowledge of unwrapping as well as time.

estimated time spent on this project would be roughly 50+ hrs

TOTAL TIME SPENT : Well over 60 hrs … to be honest i lost count …

This was my second HMC entry, the first being the Star Wars one last year. It was again a hugely enjoyable experience, but quite intense. The end result is, in my mind, worth the effort.

Comments:

Cain was a particular difficult model to create since it has so many irregular shapes and lines, and because

I had to rely on several sources of references which came from different models in different poses

(8 models was created for the movie + a full size torso). Also its non-symmetrical and has four arms with almost no identical elements.

However I am relatively happy with the result and the time it took to recreate this fabulous design.

I spend roughly 65-70 hours on this including reasearch.

Special thanks to HenrikBC for support, advice and critique.

Also a special thanks to Insroo for his support and generous supply of reference material.

I had a lot of fun doing Babe! I really wish I would've had the time to take him further but I had a blast none the less! The base mesh was modeled in Maya, sculpted and textured in Zbrush, and rendered back in Maya with Mental Ray.

Great work everybody! Some really inspiring stuff this month!

It's been the best HMC one so far. Not much stress with a relatively small time inversion. I've got it all recorded but so far I've just put together the head. It's all posted underneath...

To the competition: We've got nothing to lose here but I believe I learned a lot through this, and I hope you did too, because that the only thing that matters...

this was my second hmc,(hmc14 was my first),i really wanted to keep to zbrush this time.i struggled with zspheres ,so i got a simple

box shape figure in zbrush and from there on till the laces i kept to zbrush (and offcourse some photoshop for alphas),
spent the most time with his head, maybe 60+…but it was worth it,hopefully ill do better heads in the future, also wanted to pose

WIP THREAD

DESCRIPTION
This is the third of 3 models I finished for this challenge. It’s Pumpkinhead, created for the movie with the same name, directed by Stan. In his hand, a motorcycle chain. Watch the movie to know more about it.

Details:
100% poly painted in Zbrush. Base mesh modeled in Maya, imported in Zbrush for rapid prototyping, retopologized in Maya, back to ZBrush for detail reprojection and further fine detailing and posing using Transpose Master. No images were used for texturing, only regular alphas. The final mesh has about 12 million polys but it was rendered with one subD level less, at 3 million polys, imported directly to Maya. No displacements nor normal maps/bump used. Everything is pure geometry. Rendered in Mental Ray with 4 area lights. FastskinSSS shader used. Only color map and cavity map used (cavity plugged into the ambient slot). Render time: about 25 minutes each, on a Dual Quadcore + 8GB RAM, running Maya 2008 and Zbrush 3.1

I had a blast. Congrats to everybody who managed to finish and thank you all who stopped by my thread to say hello.

Cheers,
-Kris

Comments:
This is my main final entry image. It should capture the style of an advertising in a magazine for Mechwarriors or a poster or something like that. Keep in mind, that the Battletech is quite an old invention, and my ad should match in there.

Please click image for high res version. Please click here for ultra high version

Another beauty Image i want to show is a stylization done by a friend of mine in photoshop, based on the clay render, which will be linked further down.

So credit for this colored image goes to Ricard “Fernest Hall” Anufriev. Great thanks, mate.

Description
My Entry is a cutaway of the Vulture (Mad Dog) Battlemech, known from the Battletech Universe and Mechwarrior Games.

As Reference i mainly used the “blueprint” from FASA, which illustrate a half cutaway vulture from orthographic front view. As additional reference for the 3D look of the model i used Artworks mainly from classicbattletech.com
http://www.classicbattletech.com/im…ver@800x600.jpg
http://www.classicbattletech.com/im…utaway@full.jpg
Thanks to Hypernaut and the battletech.info community for some references, especially to Vulture_MaxPaint, who helped me to some high res images of the blueprint.
More references can be found here:
http://www.classicbattletech.com/in…Mech_Technology
http://www.twobt.de/655.0.html
And of course, the original Blueprints from FASA:
http://www.amazon.com/Omni-Mech-Blu…28484284&sr=8-1

Programs i used for this entry are: Maya, Mental Ray and Photoshop.
I think i worked on an average 2 to 3 hours a day (sometimes more, sometimes less) on this entry, barring the last two weeks, where i had nearly no time for this.

Thanks for watching! Thanks for all your comments and thanks for that great challenge!
