CGTalk Server Rollback

#19

I’m in agreement with jeroentje (did I spell that right without looking?) here, but I think a good intermediate step would be just asking people to please host their own pics if possible. (I am now trying to remember if that is done somewhere already…) I used to attach images even though I could host them myself just because it was quicker and easier, but it wasn’t a problem for me to change. I just hadn’t thought about it. There might be a significant number of people in a similar situation, in which case maybe that could really make a difference. :wavey:

Could anything be done to save the Worst Comments Ever thread? This was probably the greatest CGTalk thread of all time.

Oh, it works. It just won’t show you anything unless you’re logged in.

You can still see images directly in a post that have been loaded onto another site and are included using (img) tags.

In fact it’s better this way for me, i can simply cahnge the image as and when i want on my own site which is nice and fast. I can put up images much larger or at much higher quality than I would be able to using attachments on CGTalk… and my server will give ma a nice set of stats on the images too which is a nice bonus.

here’s one now… (held on my webspace)

and another cool thing is you can link in more than one image per pos this way, though i wont do that here as it’s a pain for people viewing the page, but it’s good when you’re doing WIP’s.

Paul it simply replace it with a link see below (this originally had the img tags)

so the problem is with the parser or vbcode or whatever they call it…

i bet its an easy thing to fix…

I think everyone has gotten really bumbed because of all this. Our greatest thread gone, no more attatchments… Could put a dark cloud over CGtalk… :frowning: I thought the server problems were fixed with the new server. Everything seemed to be running well, and fast. Then this…

[B]The topic of attachments will soon be moot.

Version 3.0 of vbulletin (in late beta testing now) will solve this issue entirely:

Attachments will actually be uploaded FTP to a folder and NOT encoded in the database.

That way, the database will consist only of text and will be a considerably smaller file size to backup regularly and more likely to maintain integrity.

Individual attachments (sitting as individual files in an FTP directory) can be backed up less frequently this way. [/B]

Sounds promising.
Lets hope for a final release soon.

not everyone has a webspace to host their images on, or a large amount of space, i only get 10mb from my provider and thats DEFINATLY not enough…

#30

Gah! Why does this always happen a day after I write a frikkin essay in reply to a tech question and before the person I was replying to had a chance to read it :hmm:

#31

i use netfirms.com for hosting my images…

its for free and you get 25 mb of web space, 1gig of transfer a month as well as ftp upload to your site which is a big plus for me.

only downside i see is the max of 50mb transfer for one day, which shouldnt happen too often though.

#32

I use www.lycos.co.uk
50MB web-space, unlimitted transfer etc., FTP… and I can link all the stuff to my own website aswell as to cgtalk.com
And it’s all directly visible on the board.
(Thanks for the tip last summer Joril  )

#33

if you people notice the most populated forum is the gallery.

how about making a small thumbnail for every image attachment? and an extra click for the full size?

not much of a techy guy ; not sure if this would cut the bandwidth traffic, but with this the crappy ones wouldn’t be downloaded

#34

I use my own hosting company server that houses my website.

Cybernautic Design (and hosting)

#35

I like Bored Alien’s suggestion best. If you can link to your pics easily, do that. If not, then keep on posting them directly in the forum. Seems the most diplomatic way to me, and most people on this forum are responsible enough to do what’s best, I reckon.

feck, lost me sig too…
