CgTalk: FXWars! TORNADO!

From wikipedia:

A tornado is a violent, rotating column of air which is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud. Tornadoes come in many sizes but are typically in the form of a visible condensationfunnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris

The Fujita Scale

F0 Gale tornado 40-72 mph
Some damage to chimneys; breaks branches off trees; pushes over shallow-rooted trees; damages sign boards.

F1 Moderate tornado 73-112 mph
The lower limit is the beginning of hurricane wind speed; peels surface off roofs; mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned; moving autos pushed off the roads; attached garages may be destroyed.

F2 Significant tornado 113-157 mph
Considerable damage. Roofs torn off frame houses; mobile homes demolished; boxcars pushed over; large trees snapped or uprooted; light object missiles generated.

F3 Severe tornado 158-206 mph
Roof and some walls torn off well constructed houses; trains overturned; most trees in fores uprooted

F4 Devastating tornado 207-260 mph
Well-constructed houses leveled; structures with weak foundations blown off some distance; cars thrown and large missiles generated.

F5 Incredible tornado 261-318 mph
Strong frame houses lifted off foundations and carried considerable distances to disintegrate; automobile sized missiles fly through the air in excess of 100 meters; trees debarked; steel re-inforced concrete structures badly damaged.

F6 Inconceivable tornado 319-379 mph
These winds are very unlikely. The small area of damage they might produce would probably not be recognizable along with the mess produced by F4 and F5 wind that would surround the F6 winds. Missiles, such as cars and refrigerators would do serious secondary damage that could not be directly identified as F6 damage. If this level is ever achieved, evidence for it might only be found in some manner of ground swirl pattern, for it may never be identifiable through engineering studies

THE CHALLENGE:

Render a realistic, forensic or fantasy type animation of Tornado doing what it does best.
Think the good parts of the film TWISTER…and you get the idea.

By popular request

the NEW RULE is out

EDITED OUT

#3

It’s going to make it more difficult to do a freeform effect if we’re restricted to a specific set of plates. What is the reasoning behind this?

#4

Good point
That is why the rule is out
By accident I created a bit of confusion by reposting the rule i had just taken out.

#5

Oh I see!! I thought you meant there WAS a new rule out, as in it had just come out and was now going to be used.

Now it makes sense.

#6

No problem man…

BTW speaking of confusion:
AP, TV organizations pull questioned video of Tornado
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080710/ap_on_en_tv/tornado_video

#7

I’m confused… we can use our own plates, right?

Thanks buddy

#8

Yes, you can.

#9

OK I have uploaded some background plates i took in Landcaster county Pennsylvania.
If there is interest i will upload some video footage.

Sweet. I’m in on this one (first FXWars entry). Coming to you from the Bay area (San Fran), can’t wait to get this rolling…

#14

Ok guys, heads up,

the plug goes live on Friday, so expect some company soon…

-R

#15

I am in this one… First one also.
Do I need to start a thread with a WIP to get the footage ?
Thanks

#16

Yes…
But you may start using just the stills.

Just click on any on the images to get a higher rez version…

#17

ARGH!
The one time an FXwars topic is perfect for me, is the month I’m without a proper workstation and software. Ah well, I guess I could try blender on this machine, but i guess i’ll just have to skip this.

#18

Actually an F5 can do everything that you have in the descript for an f6. There hasnt been any known F6’s recorded but the the May 3rd tornado in OK in 1999 did reach 318 mph making it the fastest tornado ever recorded and it threw cars over a mile, and I’ll spare you the details but the damage made was catastrophic. It was also over a mile wide and had two sometimes three satellite torandoes roaming around it. I’ve been chasing these things for years so I thought I would put in my 2 cents.

I’ve been trying to model one for years in c4d but kinda gave up on it since its easier in post. Can’t wait to see how this turns out.

#19

This is an interesting one alright - there’s a great breakdown in the film section of www.digitaldomain.com of all the passes they used on their tornado shots - for folks using afterburn it’s a must see.

when does this challenge end… i really want in but i dont know if work will allow me to have enough time…

Thanks!
