CgTalk:FXWars! The Race!

Technical Direction War

A race is a competition of speed. The competitors in a race try to complete a given task in the shortest amount of time. Typically this involves traversing some distance, but it can be any other task involving speed.

A race to cover a certain distance may be any length, and using any means stipulated by the rules. Running a distance is the most basic form of racing, but races are often conducted in vehicles, such as boats and cars, on or with animals such as horses and in aircraft.

A race may be run continuously from start to finish or may be made of several segments called heats or stages. A heat is usually run over the same course at different times. A stage is a shorter section of a much longer course or a time trial.

Early records of races are evident on pottery from ancient Greece, which depicted running men vying for first place. A chariot race is described in Homer’s Iliad.

THE CHALLENGE:

Do a sequence of a race, during it there has to be a realistic vehicle crash. The race has to involve some sort of manned vehicle.

Think of the challenge this way, you have been tasked with doing the visual effects for a race and you have a VERY short dateline. So creativity is key.

Since the topic is so broad, we have limited the scope to three mayor categories:
[ul]
[li]Historical Racing (Imagine doing a 1930’s car race or better yet, an ancient Roman chariot race. This kind of entry requires lots of attention to detail. ) [/li]
[li]Contemporary Racing (Imagine Formula One cars running at speeds over 200 MPH in the Montreal grand Prix or NASCAR cars racing the oval at the [/li]Dover racetrack in Virginia. Hell you can even do go-cart races the idea is that the challenge has to have a basis on an existing league.)

[li]Fantasy Racing (Imagine a futuristic race going up walls, or a maglev race involving flying cars… The key for this kind of entry is imagination, lots of it. And please no space crafts, we will do those in a future challenge…)[/li][/ul]Since this is a Technical Direction War you have to add a scene in your animation that has a realistic crash or pileup of vehicles. You may do completely cg sequences or a composite shots with filmed sequences and or plate. Because of the high level of difficulty, It is STRONGLY encouraged that this challenge be done in teams. Multiple techniques could be used to produce the shots (3D models, matte painting, live action, photographs etc) so good integration of composite elements is key. This is an excellent opportunity for technical directors to try their skills.

At the end pf the challenge a finished entry that looks EXACTLY like either a scene we might see on a movie like Driven (Contemporary) or in a historical movie like Ben Hur (historical), or the pod race in Star Wars ( fantasy). Since the contest of high difficulty you will have ONE month and a 1/2 to do the challenge.

TYPE OF ENTRIES:

Historical Racing (Difficulty Level HIGH)
Imagine you are driving
[ul]
[li]More emphasis on research of vehicles, tracks and environments [/li][li]Emphasis on editing, lighting and cinematography. [/li][li]The scenes in the entry require good flow and good camera work [/li][/ul]Contemporary Racing ( Difficulty Level HIGH)
Imagine you are driving
[ul]
[li]Emphasis on editing, lighting and cinematography. [/li][li]The scenes in the entry require good flow and good camera work [/li][li]The interaction of individual and the environment must be realistic. [/li][/ul]Fantasy Racing : (Difficulty Level MODERATE)
[ul]
[li]Let you imagination roam free on this one. The key for this king of entry is good camera work/ editing and lots of imagination.[/li][li]For ideas, chek these threads at the Daily Sketch Forum:[/li]CgTalk Daily Sketch 670 THE 50 MINUTE SKETCH: “Race Track:2050”
CgTalk Daily Sketch 669 THE 25 MINUTE SKETCH: “Race Car”

[/ul]The best animation/short will be selected by an open vote
for these categories:

#3

Awsome idea for a challange!
I’ll sign up ASAP.

#4

I want to join this badly :scream: , just came up with some scenes in my head already

but…

lots of other stuff I am busy with at the moment, the major one is work ofcource…

maby ill try too scueeze some free time for this

#5

we’re in again…

#6

THis sounds like a really good one to do.

#7

I may not have sufficient time to enter this contest, but I do look forward to viewing it. Some where there is a reference to “Driven”. If you are not familiar with motorsports don’t put any stock on the crash scenes, if you want to make something realistic.

Seat time and experience will be a benefit if you want to do thing realistically. Great street cars, still are not as potent as a dedicated race machine.

If you want open wheel footage, the Long Beach Grand Prix is on 4/9/06. Watch the details.

Good luck everyone.

#8

So you know guys, entries DO not have to be UBER complicated.
For example you can do a challenge with SOAPBOX racers or
Go Karts

-R

#9

This is true. Ever race a go kart? A race kart would be interesting, and much tougher then a amusement park kart. But then again, you could do an amusement park kart.

#10

Amusement cars are ok too,
and also chek out some of the cool desings that have been posted on the DSF for the fantasy entries:

CgTalk Daily Sketch 670 THE 50 MINUTE SKETCH: “Race Track:2050”
CgTalk Daily Sketch 669 THE 25 MINUTE SKETCH: “Race Car”

#11

You could always do bumper cars…

#12

I see no problem with bumper cars…

#13

I actually just started a new contemporary (though fictional) F1 model today. Too bad I can’t animate :stuck_out_tongue:

If anyone’s interested in a collab, I’d be more than interested. PM me or message me on AIM at flewp .

#14

I’m thinking of doing a 1930’s style “Gee Bee” pylon race. With the plane’s wing clipping a pylon and crashing.

#15

woch!! its not much about VFX than Story Telling!! It’s a movie you challenge here, not an VFX shot…
I m not in, too much time to do that!
good luck to every challengers!

I ever work on race shots you can watch there! and even short they, even time it takes to do!!

#16

To be honest you can do either a FULL SEQUENCE, or you can ONLY do the vehicle crash.-R

#17

Great challenge! I’m in!

#18

Sounds cool to me!

#19

Sounds great.

I’m in

#20
