CgTalk: FXWars! EARTH GO BOOM!

THE CHALLENGE:

Render a realistic/fantasy type animation of Planet Earth exploding or experiencing huge explosions.

The entry with the best VISUALIZATION will be selected by an open vote. (You may do the entry anyway way you want. HARD simulation , or an FX piece with live action, as long as the final piece has a SIMULATION of an exploding Gaia AKA Earth. The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner designed by me.

Keep in mind that the planet might survive (like in Deep Impact, Galactica) or explode in multiple pieces( like Alderaan in Star Wars).

The shots should be space based, but you may do earth POV (like in Deep Impact) if you wish.

DATELINE:

Tuesday March 18th 12:00 PM
NEW DATELINE!
Monday March 31th 12:00 PM
(You have ONE MONTH and TWO Weeks to do the challenge.)

TYPES OF ENTRY:You may do one of these types of entries:

Forensic Animation
[ul]
[li]This is the type of entry that would be used to explain the precise dynamics of Planet Earth Exploding (Imagine you have been sub contracted by the history Channel for an End of the World show. This means that you will have to do A LOT of research. (See links below)[/li][/ul]Commission Shot
[ul]
[li]Imagine that you have been commissioned to do a scene for an Ad campaign/ Movie. The commission shot will be based on the following shot description. (The show can be done in animation or live action).[/li]

NOTE if we get more than ONE finished commission entry, I will add a voting category for: Best Commission Shot

EXTERIOR SHOT: (SPACE) -Astronaut Floating in Earth Orbit
The astronaut works in the exterior of the space shuttle. All of the sudden a huge shadow overcasts his work area. As soon as he looks up, he seen a huge asteroid passing in front of him headed to earth .In horror he watches the asteroid hit the planet below.
[/ul]Freeform Entry(Fantasy) NEW!

[ul]
[li]The core requirement for this type of entry is to have fun.[/li][/ul]But keep in mind the key thing that I expect to see in all entries is accurate SIMULATIONS of a exploding planet…

CHALLENGE SPECIFIC RULES:

[ul]
[li]No work taken DIRECTLY from an existing tutorial. You may use an existing tutorial only for reference.[/li][/ul]
[ul]
[li]You may use a pre existing model, as long as you give credit to the creator. If you cant model, use simple shapes, since we are interested in the simulation. (But teams are encouraged, and if you are a modeler, you can make your model available)[/li][li]You may provide a heavily edited animation with all the trimmings (hell add live action if you want), as long a you provide another PLAIN animation of a side view of the working SIMULATION of multiple explosions in the planet surface.[/li][/ul]Voting:
For this challenge we will experiment with only ONE category:

[ul]
[li]BEST SIMULATION[/li][/ul]The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

This I have to have a go at. Got a few idea’s in my head that I had a while back.

#3

hehe, nice one!

think i will try to have fun(again) with this one…

#4

oh man, this is going to be so cooool!

#5

count me in

#6

I’m tempted to get in on this one. Just a question though. For the commission shot does it strictly have to be an asteroid. Or could it be some other cause such as a superweapon of some sort?

#7

me will give it a shot… or for that matter a boom:thumbsup:

#8

I think my favorite earth destruction sequence is still this here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=PHCNha9Xxas

#9

terminator 3 rise of the machine, done some time ago but still impressive  looking forward to see the results of this competition

#10

good challence,

i would feel great to participate,

but i need to know how to create wip etc?
how to participate?

thanks

#11

Have u guys got nothing better to do while the Earth is going BOOM all around u right now then to visualise such negative imagery?

#12

So, we can or can not make up our own shots?

#13

hmmm… maybe because we will make something(i mean a very good animation…), people will understand its time to change!..

anyway, the actual problem(for the earth and all the life living on it…), is not a collision with an asteroid, and for sure we will not change the world, doing or not this contest…
better to speak of switch off all the computer on the world to start doing something…

start doing what you said Anton, before critics others…
the simple things to open up your PC to post a thread in cgtalk is against what you said…

so, do you stop your computer, Anton, to save the world???

#14

Would you prefer if artists only produced happy sanitized images? Seriously I don’t see the big deal with the subject matter. A little over sensitive perhaps?

#15

You tell the same thing to your clients? lol

#16

thats one thing i love about the discovery and history channel. they have quite a few shows that talks about this stuff, (UNIVERSE to name one). the one about neutron stars causing the earth to blow up is amazing. maybe someone could do an animation based on that, instead of the typical asteroid or comet. heck maybe i could. i think i will take part, this will be my first challenge.

#17

hmmm roberto think you miss out the freeform entry? This challenge is interesting. Going to be my 1st attempt. Good luck to everyone, including me

#18

ill think ill start give the FX challenges a go!

#19

This sounds interesting.I’m not good at any of this stuff ,but maybe I should give it a try.
Any way I’m sure there is going to be lots of exellant.

#20
