STILL EDITING…
CgTalk: FXWars! TRIBUTE

Note: Lets see who can guess all the films on the image…

FX WARS TRIBUTE
From wikipedia:

Visual effects (commonly shortened to Visual F/X or VFX) are the various processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live action shoot. Visual effects involve the integration of live-action footage and generated imagery to create environments which look realistic, but would be dangerous, costly, or simply impossible to capture on film. Visual effects using computer generated imagery (CGI) have become increasingly common in big-budget films, and have also recently become accessible to the amateur filmmaker with the introduction of affordable animation and compositing software

THE CHALLENGE:

Render a realistic, forensic or fantasy type animation based on a classic PRE DIGITAL visual fx sequence. And here is the kicker, NO IN SPACE SHOTS. That will be part of a future FX challenge. This means that both the creation of the FX and their composites most have been done using traditional FX methods.

The entry with the best VISUAL EFFECTS will be selected by an open vote. (You may do the entry anyway way you want , an FX piece with live action, a synthetic cg entry or a hybrid. The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner designed by me.

Keep in mind that the entry can be set in ANY time period, and the style of the project can be either in a realistic or campy.

DATELINE:
February 15 , 2010
(After that You have TWO MONTHS and TWO WEEKSto do the challenge.)
NOTE THERE WILL NOT BE A VOTING PLUG

TYPES OF ENTRY:
You may do one of these types of entries:
-DIRECT TRIBUTE
Recrete a classic PRE DIGITAL fx sequence
-FREEFORM ENTRY
The core requirement for this type of entry is to have fun. Use the Classic FX sequence as a starting point.
-VFX BREAKDOWN
This would be the kind of entry that one would see for a detailed explanation pf how a visual fx sequence was done .Think Discovery Channel special But keep in mind the key thing that I expect to see in all entries is GOOD VISUAL EFFECTS…
Here is a great example from Digital Domain:

Great I will be participating in this one  now to decide what to do! Might I ask what movie that first picture with the burning building is from?

#3

No in space shots…
Is it safe to assume scenes from alien worlds are still fair game?

#4

Those are very kosher…

#9

Gone with the Wind

#10

Thanks for the reply I think I will be attempting that scene then  or a simular scene from some other movie :stuck_out_tongue:

#11

Hey Roberto, just wanted to confirm…so this challenge finishes up in February 2011 so we have 2 months from now?

#12

And here is the kicker, NO IN SPACE SHOTS. That will be part of a future FX challenge. This means that both the creation of the FX and their composites most have been done using traditional FX methods.

Hey Roberto,
I’m a bit confused about the “kicker” - NO IN SPACE SHOTS does mean “No shots in a space environment” or all shots are allowed as long as FX where real models and comps are done with an optical printer?

Hope you can clarify that for me

Cheers

Axel

#13

I meant to say OUTER SPACE

#14

so this is due on feb 15th?

#15

yes it is, good luck

#16

So i decided to a scene from backdraft but when i do it do i have to do pretty much exactly what is done in the film or can i just recreate it with a different setting and stuff? and also when you say "* IF you use footage for a VFX sequence it must be raw NOT contain any Visual Effects." do you mean you have to put the explosion or whatever directly on it with no cc or lighting or anything like can you edit it from raw? Or do u mean you cant use footage that has stuff done to it?

#17

It means exactly what it says: "IF you use footage for a VFX sequence it must be raw NOT contain any Visual Effects."

If you want to use footage in your shot, it must be raw footage with no visual effects already in it. Eg, you could use footage you shot with your video camera…but you couldn’t use footage from say Transformers with robots and cg elements everywhere.

#18

Ohhh I understand :stuck_out_tongue: thanks
