CgTalk:FXWars! Challenge#14 DISINTEGRATION

#18

wow this subject reminds me my last fxwars close encounters in which i did “disintegration” effect for alien’s burning shot. I also got an idea for this challange. if i will get the time, i will be in for this one.and also got a digi cam, so it will be fun. gr8 idea roberto and gr8 work on compilation of all examples.

As I’m going to be basing my entry on Mars Attacks (great movie btw, watched again at the weekend) and I did a bit of research. All images and video ©1996 Warner Brothers

Looking forward to posting up my work in progress soon!

For those without access to Xmen 3, here’s a short clip from the VFX awards, showing some disintegration elements towards the end:

Awesome challenge, Roberto, and awesome research too! I’m itching to participate, but I just don’t have the time. And I still have a half-finished Ocean FXwars entry that I have to finish before starting anything new.

Cheers, and good luck to all participants, looking forward to seing the entries.

Hi, Roberto!

I checked the top post, but all I could find was "Entries can be done from a still image."

Are still images allowed? If not, I think it would be great if such a category could be added, since it might allow more people to participate on some level.

Even with the extended deadline I don't believe I would have enough free time to commit to a full animation (especially since I'm busy with some of my own plus other 3D/2D projects).

Just for fun, earlier today I started to work on something, and then I got into it a little beyond the casual point, when you just have to go ahead and finish it regardless.

So, FWIW, here is the still image + information:

(direct image link)

No problem at all if it can't be used. I had fun trying it and look forward to participating possibly in future challenges :)

Some info about the image:

The idea here was to attempt a sort of "Alice in Wonderland" descent but with a quantumish treatment, drawing disintegration inspiration from effect shots such as those done in the Tron and Mummy films, for example.

Blender's render nodes were used for motion blur. Two nodes handle that here: one for vertical blur and one for z-depth blur.

There are vector and regular blur nodes. Since this was a still shot, I opted for regular blur nodes. For animation purposes, vector nodes would be the way to go.

In older versions, Blender motion blur was quite a render-intensive/time-consuming operation requiring multiple render passes. Vector blur now handles that instantly within the built-in Compositor.

Particle effects were used with field effectors. Fields specifically used were Wind and Vortex.

Rigging was used primarily to position and deform the character. Lattice deformation + shape keys could also have been used here for animation purposes.

A simple three-point lighting setup was used.

So many possibilities to consider, which is what I like about the challenges in general, to get us thinking and working in new ways.

Well, I really look forward to checking out all the cool entries we're bound to see in the coming weeks for this challenge.

As always, thanks for all the work you do, Roberto, and best wishes to everyone.

Hi Robertt,

if you make your image into an animation, yes you can post it in our challenge.

BREAKING NEWS!

I am right now in negotiations to get some common RAW footage from a previous challenge to use in this one.

So if you were on the fence about joining the challenge, well your excuses are over.
Keep an eye on this thread for more information.

For the live action entries you may use this footage, but if you do have to give credit to Daniel J. Lezama L., Daniel Sunwoo and David Schoneveld (actor).

Cool! Really up for this!

#27

Guess I’m in the same boat as a lot of others here, tremendous interest - little time. I’ll see if I can figure out a way to get involved, this is too cool to pass up.

#28

Does anyone have any reference stills from Interview with a Vampire? Specifically the part where Claudia and the woman are in that well and get exposed to the sunlight. I would really appreciate if anyone has something…this is the concept that i want to do. Thanks all!

#31

Great challenge Roberto. I’m planning on entering, but I won’t create a thread until I have my background plates shot and start on the FX. Don’t want another repeat of the Race challenge where I didn’t finish

#32

Well Tibes, I do hope to see your entry.
Good luck!

[some disintegration test i did today...](http://core2core.de/spielwiese/schimmel-disintegration.mov)

this is kind of outer competition again...just did some tests for our current project today...please view that in super slowmo scrubbing through the mov to see all the details. i stuffed all the disintegration into 100 frames due to render time...

the final effect will be rendered with at least 4 layers of particles with differend random seed on the position object so there will be no see-throughs anymore

hell! i wish i already had mocap data for further testings :(

PS: The skeleton "explosion" will be accomplished in XSI so that is only a "replacement effect". take no further notice on that :wise:

kind regards
