CgTalk:FXWars! Cannon Fire! - Cryptite

#1

Hello everyone, gonna try an actually join a FXWars challenge here and get one finished off in time. Plan on using Fume FX for the smoke blast and a combination of things for the Tower crumbling as well.

Here’s Phase 1 of the Cannon fire/smoke explosion. It’s a little slow for a real cannon but that’s easily fixable.

Test #1

****ing Slick

Couple screens of some updates.

First, textured the Cannon, working on the plumeage still. Unfortunately with fume, you can’t just make the whole thing faster without having the whole sim change things on you; so i’m messin around with stuff trying to get the quick puff out to look right.

Second a test for some of the tower bits on fire. Tower is, obviously, thus far untextured.

pretty slick so far dude! i too am using fume for the cannon fire and am having a hell of a time getting it to look right.

think you could give me a pointer or two on how you got your smoke to ‘billow’ so nicely?

renders look great man. quick note on your textures(not sure if they are final, but you should prob. tex. the chain metal :))

are you using just an omni light? or is your fume lighting the cannon and tower, if so how do you get fume to light outside objects?

cheers and keep up the good work

Hi
I’m not part of the challenge and found your thread by accident. Your first test looks very good. I would love to know how controlled the motion of the particles. Are you using MAX and afterburn? I’ve always figured you’d need to use maxscript for this kind of problem.(It works … but takes ages.) Is there a better way?

#6

Hey Kenzor, the test was actually driven by a fluid-based plugin solver called Fume FX. That was how I achieved the nice billowing motion of it. As a result, no AB, or maxscripting was necessary. All the smoke and fire action is all Fume FX.

@BlueGriffin: In the process of speeding up the animation, I lost some of the nice billowiness that I had going on, so I’m re-tweaking it again. One of the keys of messing with your billow-factor is playing with the Vorticity. I should also mention that i’m using vRay to render these out so combined with GI and the vRay Sun, all the pretty little things show up. Plus you can crank up the vRay GI in respect to the Fume fire to get the glowing.

I cant see anything in the video. Its all black.

#8

Try reinstalling your version of Quicktime or saving file to disk and loading it off of your cpu. Other than that, those are my only two ideas. Good luck.

#9

I repaired my install. Works now. Thanks.

Nice video.

#10

Tom, why do you even try? Your work completely sucks everytime you try something. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m kidding. Great work.

#11

Hi Tom, i like your stuff which render engine you are using?

#12

Sorry for the delayed reply; been tough getting in work on this with school interfering all the time. I’m using vRay for rendering.

Should have a few new screens coming soon. I’m gonna try, if I can, to finish this by Friday as i’ll be out of town this weekend.

I’ve got the cannon/dust impact pretty down and i’ll post a screen of that shortly.

Made the tower sorta Magical and such since I noticed it has a rounded bottom (which would suggest, unless it’s attached at the side, that it does not sit on the ground. So I decided to go creative-style and make it float with a sort of Magical blue aura on the bottom rounded bit with some emitted blue smokey stuff.

If I have time, I’d like for a cannonball to hit this, make it explode all neat-like and be the reason this thing crashes down. But we shall see. Still setting up everything to get it ready.

Also, threw a texture on the tower. Due to time constraints, I don’t think i’m gonna get any more detailed on texturing the tower. It looks good enough to me for now so I’m gonna focus on the rest of the stuff so I can get this done in time.

Here’s a screen:
