CONCEPT ART: “Frankenstein’s Castle”

We will be working in conjunction with the
Hardcore Modeling Challenge & FXWARS ForumForum during the month of October.
The idea is that by October 31st we will have created a opening vfx shot of a remake of “Frankenstein”. The idea is that each forum will cater to their strenghts.

This is where you guys come in,

We need CONCEPT ART of “Frankenstein’s Castle”. The idea is to design a “Frankenstein’s Castle” that is both fantastic and believable. So I strongly recommend to do some research before starting the sketches.

Keep in mind that the sketches you do might end up becoming either 3d models or digital matte paintings.

You may design:

[ul]
[li]Exterior shots[/li][li]Interior Main Chamber[/li][li]Doctor Frankensteins Lab.[/li][/ul]You may draw :

[ul]
[li]Concept paintings[/li][li]Storyboards[/li][li]Concept Diagrams[/li][/ul]
You may start posting now, but the Hardcore Modeling Challenge people will use you sketches for a ONE WEEK modelling challenge on October 1st.

These are the rules for this mini challenge:

[ul]
[li]Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.[/li][li]Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.[/li][li]RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600[/li][li]They can be done on any medium.[/li][li]If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.[/li][li]The artist also has to post total length of time it took and program used. .[/li][li]You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them).[/li][/ul]Good luck

Is there any chance someone could post a little synopsis about the castle described in the Book? Of course we can take our own path on it… but it would be nice to have the ‘official’ description as a starting point. . Im gona be busy on this all night! LOL.

#3

this is pretty much the gist of it:

#4

ok, looks like I’m the first…

aproximately 1:45h in photoshop, including the time for making THIS photo-collage with some pictures I took this summer (from Krakow mainly, some other places too)… it was a great help, as I suck at drawing architecture and buildings…

maybe I should spend more time adding details…and I don’t like the trees much, but that’s it for today

#5

hope you enjoy this

its more comic style concept art

1,5h correl wacom

#6

EToby - cant see your image?

#7

Tried to make something believable yet fantastic.
2 hours. Photoshop.

#8

great work here
mine : 35min / PhotoshopCs2

#9

about 2 hours, photoshop and tablet

#10

if i get to do the 1 week modeling contest for frankenstein’s castle, im DEFINITELY using this one for the concept…

#11

1.5 Hrs in photoshop. Used 6 different photo resorces. and painted them all together, and changed all the lighting to night. Ill post the ref photos later. It may look too dark on some monitors… low-key is always a pain to do digitally.

#12

Waoo, great ambiant Codenothing, composition is good, and village is really well made.

#13

boo.

here's my concept - some good old-fashioned melodrama. 3hrs PS, original res about 2200x1800.

codenothing- great work!

#14

Great stuff, guys. I wanna try a different castle style. It’s actually just a very big screw. About 40-45 minutes. I’m too lazy to continue.

A monochromatic version

#15

awesome design, pipichu

#16

hmmm, quite happy with it, but its kinda uninspired…
About 4.5 hours, Photoshop, Intuos 3

Another half an hour.
Don’t know if its better with or without the bridge.
I think with the bridge in front, the feel for the deep cliffs gets lost somehow…

not sure if this will help anyone but Geneva Switzerland is the town where all this took place in the Mary Shelly version, found some information about it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geneva%2C_Switzerland

I also googled some images for you:

first ones a bit to large to post in the thread so heres the link [sorry i was lazy and didnt want to resize]

audit - brilliant! totally captures the castle in my mind

pipichu - I love yours as well - very different but still seems perfect for Frankenstein!

#19

codenothing, I can’t see yours, and all I know is that it must be something worth to see!
…on the other hand I CAN see EToby’s…

EToby - a bit messy IMO, maybe if you had used thinner lines it would read more easily… but I liked the amount of details, the 1816 calendar is a nice touch, hehe…

Mats Gustaffson - did you use the photo of a building underneath? it looks very good, a bit like a factory, and it plays well…

Deevad - great shadows, great colors…

rapture - good job, it’s kind of new to see the castle in the sunlight… as a crit, the lack of windows/details make it look a bit like a sand castle

audit - WOW, and WOW again, amazing work

pipichu - great idea, and great details

Vyse-soa - very intelligent use of that tiled texture… I’m still not very sure how exactly did you do that…

I never entered any chalenge here, I´ll check the sign up thread when it´s up so I can find partners and engage some phase of the projects.
