i got a little more on the solar halos , if anyone’s interested:

“Sometimes in very cold weather optical halos are formed by crystals close to ground level,
called diamond dust. The crystals behave like jewels, refracting and reflecting sunlight
between their faces, sending shafts of light in particular directions.”

here’s a halo from Antarctica (haven’t taken these pics myself)

so it’s a pretty rare phenomenon, happening mostly in the colder regions, exceptions
do happen though:

“People in Miami were treated to a rare sight called a solar halo in the early afternoon
of Friday, May 17, 2002. It’s a localized weather phenomon caused by a thick layer of
ice crystals in the atmosphere refracting light from the sun. The solar halo is a precusor
to a weather front.”

"Sun Dogs , also known as parhelia (single parhelion), appear as near-horizontal colored spots or bars on both sides of the sun, at nearly a 22 degree angle. Sun dogs are uncommon and typically appear only when a low sun shines through loose cirrus clouds, e.g., in a milky-white winter afternoon sky. "

So this is apparently what I had in the photos I took

When the sun dog phenomenon is seen around the Moon rather than the Sun, it is called a mock moon, moon dog, or by the proper name paraselene.

I dunno if the moon dog is the same as halo around the moon, which I’ve
seen once or twice , the halo filled the whole sky, looked amazing

In another news , the temps here came up from the nasty -22ºC and settled
to a nice -17 . Other parts of Finland been breakin some records, as they’ve
measured temps as low as -41ºC (about -42ºF) .

Moscow ,Russia been suffering from temps as low as -32ºC and many homeless
people have died because of that and other people have had serious frostbites ,
one example being a dude freezing his hand talking barehanded to a cell phone
for a bit too long outside.

that didn’t stop some citizens of Moscow from taking the traditional winter dip
into the icy waters of nearby ponds or lakes . Hehe , how nuts can u get??

.

#649

Look who’s talking, you crazy fins go jump in icy lakes during the winter. At least my aunt and her husband does and then they go sit in a sauna for a while and then do it again a couple of times

#650

haha yea my mom does that too, but not sure if she’d do it in -32ºC tho… pretty
sure I wouldn’t, I mean I’ve ran in the snow naked ,but that water thing feels
a bit too hardcore to me , heh , ah well, never know…

.

#651

So halos are kind of like frost rainbows
Neat. Snow crystals are sharper than raindrops so therfore they make a less colorful illusion, I think… It would make sense

That must have been really pretty
They probably have a different name for it though, since they had for the sun

D: Oh my god! that’s really pushing it

Farijah- Wow, great work
Rebeca- congrats huggle buggle

#652

loocas and Lady M,

Thanks so much! I’m so excited!

Cheers,

Rebeccak: Really nice article! I thouroughly enjoyed reading it.

Squibb: Those are some cool ass halo’s. Dont remember seeing one from the sun quite like those but I sure enough have seen them on the moon.

Dolls…dolls? no no I play with action figures. Figurines! lol :wip: That is true the first is the best one.

Is it true that the people of Finland love Conan? :curious: I love Conan!

#654

There’s CONAN:

and there’s CONAN

 :buttrock:

#655

#657

hello to everyone . havent posted in a while . too much to do in the university this week.
Great photos panu .
elsie great sketching
Fahrijia: the sketch looks amazing great work
beccalicious congrats on the article. was very nice reading it
guys think about the rules . wouldnt want the thread to be closed like bonanza because we are posting outside images . That will bring the rath of the crazy korean girl

#658

If you ask me, both rock

Yea i guess he’s quite popular here , we got many fans of the show at work
and there’s been a bunch of Finns in Conan’s audience too, I even recognized
one dude, who’s an actor here. So funny when they struggle through some
Finnish sentences in the show, must be real difficult, but they do try; in one
episode they even sang in finnish, hehe

Did you know Conan O’Brien is coming to Finland ?
He’s doing a four day visit, starting February 14th , filming some stuff
here for his show, god knows what he’ll come up with … :surprised

o comon be a man about it

Elsie, Rebecca, Squib, Valentina, Jannis thank you for feedback  - still trying out things :arteest:

   thank you Therry. :)

Colors > difficult to explain cause that´s the only thing I do rather intuitive without
agonising how to do it. I often start with the idea what kind of colors I would like to
use for a special theme/thumbnail sketch and then I just do it.

I use the dodge tools of the layer and brush effect settings > multiply, color dodge, linear
dodge? (linear abwedeln), color and overlay. The dodge tool of the toolbar isn´t really
good because it doesn´t work color related. The color dodge I use very careful by setting
the percentage lower or choosing a darker color cause it fast burns your content away.

Another good thing I use very often to push the image into other directions is to set the
brush on overlay. This generates many nice effects worth it to play around with - e.g. If
you take a brighter color you can achieve a similar effect like the color dodge but it
doesn´t have the same brightness and doesn´t destroy so much of your painted content.
If you give the overlay brush some different colors you can get some nice color
effects/variations. I´m still experimenting with those things. On the other hand the overlay
setting can emphasise painted structures perfectly > especially if you use it with a darker
color. I so much love that effect. I hope this gives you an idea.

Not to sound like a spoil sport but we should prevent to post images we haven´t made
ourselfes just to make sure not to force another thread-closure.

yea loocas watch out there :stuck_out_tongue:

those pics I posted are on my own site, not on random websites.
