Cool insect photos, I though I might actually post on here for a change instead of just having a look! guess this fits in with the insect pics. This is my first attempt at organic modelling that i’m doing for the hardcore modelling challenge #10 : animals in motion

Tarantula vs mouse

Still lots of Zbrush stuff to go. After doing this I have a lot of respect for organic modellers, it’s bloody hard to do!

Glad you guys like the bug pics. I’ll have to post the mantis eating the hornet pics.
As paperclip mentioned, it takes lots of shots to get one worth keeping, when shooting bugs.

Gord-MacDonald—Nice fly shot.

Here’s a tarantula shot. Another scan of a 35mm slide. Since I’ve been shooting digital, I forgot how much cleaning up you need to do on scanned slides that sat around for a while. The spider is sitting on one of my Paasche AB Turbo airbrushes (lefty model), which is sitting on a calculator. I guess it could be a Poe-esk homage to art, science and the lure of the mysterious. I’ll have to post some light and cheery pics next time.

Man, thats freaking me out…
Nice going Octopus, needs some work on the mouse tho. Head and claws.

Update on Kay Moon

currently working around a freelance job, so she’s taking longer than expected.

Bit of an update

Gotta sort out the lashes and the parting.

#2945

These hardcore modelling challenges have got my modelling juices going again. Loving every bit of it.

My progress in the challege so far.

Very nice mesh. Looks like you have a hole or a flipped normal at the bottom of the eye. It’s probably just a point that needs to pulled in a bit (bottom right point needs to be pulled left and up a tad on that polly). Are you going to detail it in ZBrush 3? It seems this challenge is a ZB3 contest. Again, that cat is looking great so far. Good luck in the contest!

I’ve been following that ‘animals in motion’ challenge. I might enter even though I’m packed with work . I’ll probably enter knowing there’s a slight chance of finishing on time.
I’ve got my animal picked and tons of reference collected already. I’ll have to use ZB2 since I’m a die-hard waiting for the osx version of ZB3. I’m going to miss the posing capability in ZB3 on this one, if I enter.

Here’s my first (couple years ago) serious ZB2 model. It took just under 5 hours from cage to current state, minus rigging. It can use more finishing. I rigged and posed it in Cinema 4D. The thick and lean look variations come from tweaking the displacement map in C4D.

Nice work on the cat, looks great, and excellent work on the Horse Quadart.
Looks real.
Id enter, but Ive got bits of freelance work to finish up and this Kay Moon project of mine.

Thats pretty typical for me on organics when I’m at the low res level, I don’t typically fix things like that because LW and ZB do such a good job of cleaning them up. Smoothing or subdividing straightens it out.

Yes, I’m going to finish the base in LW and then detail in ZBrush. Only thing I’m not totally sure of is the fur. I have an idea how I’m going to do it and I’ve researched quite a few different methods just haven’t decided on one yet. Thanks Quad.

Airflow - Thanks bro. I thought I was going to have to drop out of this one due to work again. But got all of that taken care of, back to the fun work.

Hey guys I’ve been gone for a while but I thought I’d pop in and let you know that my team’s entry in the 48 Hour Film Project, “Spiral Bound”, won an award for Best Use of Prop last night. The film unites a man with a penchant for losing things and a magical notebook with the ability to find them—until his fiancée’s diamond ring goes missing.

I’ll post a link once we are allowed to show the film online.

Hello everyone, today while i was driving at home, i saw some nice shaped clouds which i wanted to share with you.

Enjoy

#2954

Looks cool but really makes you wonder what was going on up there. Nice smooth sheet of clouds and then bam, turbulence. I guess a pilot would know.

#2955

Hi Rebecca,
I just don’t think that would work. You see, some of us are young (like me) and trying to learn the craft. I really don’t think that there’s a necessity to prove that with your idea.
Good one, though.

#2956

Wow! Nice work all!

Quad, great mantis photos! Can’t say the same for the tarantula though- my heart skipped a beat when I saw it and I had to scroll down quickly.

…what’s everyone up to now?

#2958

Glad you started this up again, ill get the ball rolling.
Somthing Im doing in 3dsmax

Might post in the wip section when I get time.

#2959

You know, I think I still need a place outside of a WIP thread to post about work. Hopefully this’ll pick back up again.

I was making Steampunk Luke Skywalker for the latest HMC challenge but I had taken a family vacation (much needed) in the middle of the contest. Plus we had major melt downs with some of our clients so I just didn’t have the time to finish. Not typical steampunk, he is a steampunk samurai which I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. Traditional garb with steampunk equipment. You can see the rest in the thread. HMC #17

Unfortunately the tale sounds very similar to last month. For HMC #16 I was doing the Predator. Then there was all that hubbub about the Hurricanes and such. Suffice to say 10 days without power did not help my situation. Work got quite nuts after that so I was only able to finish a bust. I did finish however. You can check the thread in my sig.

HMC #18 is “Cutaway”. In other words, a cutaway model that exposes the inside and the outside of a subject in a techincal manner. I have a great idea for it and it’s simple enough I should be able to finish a few different types. Anyway, that’s my update for the last few months. How has everyone else been doing?

#2960

Both looking nice mate.
Dont wanna jinx it, but you entering the challenge 23?
