Hey hey Peter, glad you like the pics! I’ll process another batch soon I hope and post more. I’ve got a ton up here:

It’s a lot of rocks and hills. But they’re really pretty. I was really glad to have driven out here vs. just flying and shipping the car out. I definitely want to see more of Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. The Grand Canyon blew my mind.

wow 7 days of driving, all by your lonesome?

hey rebecca, beautiful street/rock shots. Inspired by that I would like to indroduce a german traffic jam. I“ve taken the photo on thuesday last week on the way back home after a meeting with one of our customer. This traffic jam was about 11 kilometer long caused by the usual high velocity accidents.

greetings

What a cool trip, reading your blog I didn’t realize you drove the whole way, good for you.

I just recently had a chance to see the Grand Canyon too. There is no way to put into words the visual splendor of seeing such a thing, sensory overload! I’d seen pictures before but didn’t do it any justice. It was cool being a business trip with all the business over, me and my friends found a rock outcrop and watched the sun set and the stars come out, that was amazing. Reminds me that no matter what we produce, nature is the ultimate spectacle.

hate those traffic jams…they drive me insane!

Here are a few pics I took today while out and about. I’m enjoying my holiday!

Oh wow, capturing a fly, very nice.

I had the hardest time taking a picture of a honey bee that wouldn’t hold still let alone a fly.

I have a new addiction- insect photography! You need to take so many pics before you actually find one that’s worth keeping, but I love seeing them so close up.

#2928

Nice pics Rebecca. I see some that are deffinately Colorado . . . makes me homesick

#2929

It is indeed, not quite as good as you-know-what though. sigh

I don’t suppose there’s any hope of a comeback, even for one week?

hi Paperclip - I have had a long standing interest in ā€œbug picturesā€, here is one from my online portfolio (btw - long time no see!!!)

That bug is ā€˜bleeding’! (under his wing)

#2932

OMG - I can’t stand the sight of blood!

#2933

ā€œyou-know-whatā€ - hmm - must be a secret!

#2934

Off topic but I had to post somewhere. I just read 7 pages of the ā€œMario Party/PCā€ debate thread only to find that Leigh closed it. Dah! And I had such funny things to add to the conversation.

Oh well.

I am simply outraged. What if I don’t paint, I render? They’re not being sensitive to the 3d community.

IĀ’m a bug nut too. HereĀ’s one of my bug pics. Plenty more where that came from.
Actually macro photography is a hobby of mine and insects are favorite subjects. I recently started scanning a bunch of 35mm slides from my pre-digital days and thought this would be the perfect place to show them, along with some digital photos.

This thread is a very interesting and relaxing departure from the daily grind.

Is that a female? I think I saw a tv show once about them breeding. It was bizzare, cause while they were having intercourse the female started eating the male. But it didn’t stop him from doing his job. Pretty amazing. Have you perhaps encountered such scenario while shooting?

#2938

Pretty sure itĀ’s a male Praying Mantis. YouĀ’re supposed t be able to tell males from females by the number of segments they have on their abdomens. Males have 8, females 6. And yes, females often cannibalize the males during sex, though IĀ’ve never witnessed this myself.
I had a green and a brown mantis as pets some 15+ years ago, and shot tons of photos of them. These are scans from that bunch. I picked the mantids up in early fall and decided to keep them. The first frost would have killed them anyway. I had to keep them separated for the cannibalism reason. The brown one turned out to be female. That was obvious when she laid an egg cluster on the top of the aquarium. I feed them crickets through the winter.

HereĀ’s another mantid pic. This one was of the brown one. I played with the colors in Photoshop.

Great photos, I’ve encountered a few mantis in the wild. Always a cool find.

Great Mantis photos!
