Welcome, Dystle! What a nice debut you have there, I like the curious sadness in it.

Sazem, awesome! Funky combination with those halftone patterns. Manga Studio works for you well.

I finally did an “old style” painting again the way I used to just go at it without any reference or careful sketch to prepare a figure. I’ve had great fun with space there and the little planet, which took about 15 minutes, but then I spent for ever on the centurion. First I actually did a different sketch, where I outlined a character and tried to be correct with perspective and all, but I hated it…so stiff. Then I just tossed it all and simply doodled this guy in there. I looked at some roman armor references, spear, shoes and shield to get at least the elements into the ballpark. <sigh> that was nice…

thanks Taron!

I gotta say that your piece has something really awsome!! The feeling of floating in lost time and such. Also the planet has really cool texture… looks like cracket paint!
Good job man!

Ah. Already starting to spend too much time on this, and it’s not really going anywhere. Throwing it in the way it is. A waxman!

I should probably have just made it a facial portrait or minimal bust, since I had way more fun with the face than anything else. Also the majority of time got sucked into hopeless fudging with the body and armor despite not really having a plan for it. I rarely draw male faces though, so this was a fun exercise.

Now that I’ve managed to post something, I can take a moment to praise Taron’s picture. Excellent drama! It all has such a sinister and epic clay character to it, and a great effortless posture. Do you think you got some useful exercise and warmup from that initial “stiffy” sketch, maybe? I’ve found that myself sometimes, that preparation really helps even if it’s not put directly as scaffolding into the image.

The bumpy paints are once again put to great use. Seems made for topographical landscapes, and you even managed to work some space into it! Jackpot, I’d say. Only thing I wonder is… why are there stars in front of his right leg?

(oh, and how did you arrive at that frilly ballet skirt? it looks appropriate somehow, but… yeah, can’t help but make the association)

Sazem: Overall look seems nice and stylish to me, especially with the armor/cape and colors. His face looks terrified, as if he’s indeed the last in a defense line, about to be crushed after watching all his friends go before him.

Welcome, dystle! Nice touch with the subtle blue light licking that brick wall.
