Centaur Warior

#1

Hello first time to CGTalk and want to show something I have worked on for a friend. Photo-manipulating/digital painting was definitely challenging, but I really enjoyed it. Any comments or critiques are greatly appreciated!

Would help if you included an image.

Sorry Robert!

I guess my work wasn’t sufficient enough to show on the forum. If interested, please look into my portfolio for the Centaur piece.

P.S. Your work truly inspire me back in college days when I was flipping through ImageFX magazine and I can’t believe your actually posting on my post! Much appreciated.

Thanks again.

There’s no restriction to post images in the WIP forums. You simply forgot to include the image in your post. Just edit your original post and add your image to it.

Oh so embarrassing, will fix that now!

Thank you!

Hi Mansen!

I like the texture and color on the ground in the very foreground, and the horse looks good anatomically. The biggest problems I see are that the pose of the man-part is stiff, and the man-part doesn’t mesh well with the horse-part. The horse-part of the centaur is at an angle, since the horse-part is in the midst of turning. The man-part is at less of an angle. The man-part is attached to the horse-part off-center.

If we righted the horse-part, the man-part would be listing off to the side. Does that make sense?

Think about the hypothetical anatomy of a centaur. The man-part spine would probably connect up to the horse-part spine at the horse’s shoulders. There wouldn’t be any allowance for him to twist like this.

It’s possible for the man-part to twist upright, but the base of the man-part spine needs to meet the horse-part.

That’s part of the problem with the man’s pose. The other is that his arms don’t connect correctly with his torso. Right now, we are viewing his torso at an angle. We are viewing his arms head-on. If you have a mannequin or a mirror, you can grab a quick reference to correct this.

Check your light sources. They’re inconsistent. The sky and landscape seem to be indicating a light source from behind the centaur (not reflected on the centaur), the man-part seems to be indicating a light source from behind, above, and to the left of the viewer, and the horse-part seems to be indicating a light source above and to the right. If you want to pull off a convincing photo manip, making sure your light sources are consistent is huge.

Last thing—the dust cloud is too opaque and flat in value.

Hope this helps! Let me know if I can clarify anything for you.

Thank you so much for taking time to explain in details of your suggestions Andrea! I will definitely look into how I can improve this piece further more with the suggestions you provided.
