CAtPart file to OSX

#1

Does anyone have a workflow for opening a CATPart (catia) on OSX without a PC?

With a PC?

Thanks.

Hi Alonzo,

as far as I know there is no way to do this on a Mac, because
there is no Catia Version for Mac until now.
But you should be able to install Catia on an Intel-Mac (Bootcamp).

I heard about that NX6 is available for Mac meanwhile,
but I don`t know if there are import-options for native Catia files.

Also Polytrans (PC)…
not sure, but as far as I remember there a import modules available for that.

And one more thing I found…but I don`know that tool (PC only):

Hi Alonzo,
PunchCAD’s products (ViaCAD, Shark, etc.) can open CATIA files.
Actually I think only Shark includes the CATIA translator.
Shark is Mac and PC.

Thanks Tom…David !

In 2010, you would think there’s a few technical issues that would have been overcome by now. I’m a bit supprised that CATIA, as standard in 3D CAD doesn’t even have a common import/export option for part files on the Mac (a standard in presentation)

So Tom I tried Polytrans on a iMac Bootcamp but I kept getting import errors. And Thanks Dave, I knew you probably worked with this problem before. Glad to see you still around the forums.

I’ll get back to you guys when I get something.

It’s not necessarily a technical problem, it’s a monetary problem. Catia translators are extremely expensive, so most companies offer this only as an add-on (with annual renewal fees).

PolyTrans also needs an add-on, which is available separately (not from Okino). The regular version, even with CAD/Granite pack isn’t able to do it.

Shark FX was a good tip, but the currently released version only reads Catia v4. Since your file extension is “CATpart”, this is a Catia v5 file. Shark FX v7, which is currently in Beta, will translate such files. It is possible for Shark FX users to get a beta version now for testing.

One other option is Acrobat 3D (=Extended). Acrobat translates Catia files, and (with the right import settings) can be exported to STEP, Parasolid and IGES.

Thanks for this extensive input and insight into the problem. Acrobat 3D??? I’ll give it a whirl.

I was amaze PT couldn’t not open it either. Thanks for the clarifications. :applause:  :banghead:
