Cati's occasional Sketchbook

Thanks for your comment Rabid1.

I’m no expert in oilpaint but I find that painting in traditional media seems to improve my skills in digital form. The layer system is very similar to that of the digital media. But since oilpaint is very strict about what you add in the first layers you’ll have to think a lot before you even start on a painting.
You have to know about mixing colours… it’s a tremendous help when you move to a program like Painter (which I use a lot). The most difficult thing is to understand the amount of white you can use because it’s something that can make all the difference in the end. In oilpainting - you very rarely use white as ‘white’.

I’ll add here few drawings while I’m waiting for the gesso to dry (sizing some papers).

Charcoal drawing to test out techniques I’ve learnt lately.

Few croquis drawings with ink and strawpen

Here’s a portrait drawing. I’ve managed to get the likeness in there but the composition sucks big time. I used graphite.

Nice work Cati, you have great stroke control with this last update…with charcoal, graphite and ink all very confident lines. That sphere has wonderful lighting too…looking foward to more…you should post your painting once it dries a bit =)

Thanks for your kind comments again, Rabid1.

I hope to post something more finished here soon.

I started doodling with Painter and here’s the results…

Here’s few that I’ve finished on my two week vacation…

First – some Finnish landscape…

tried to achieve cartoonish looking scenery…

then some beach in 50’s style… dunno if I succeeded

and a spacestation… I made no effort to try to make it look real…

Oh… and all these were made 100% in Artrage 2.5

Here are some doodles I’ve made lately with ArtRage

i really like those last artrage doodles, that yellow head really got me! :stuck_out_tongue:

I found a great little software and I’ve been doodling around with it all day. Haven’t come up with anything great yet but here’s my first drawing…

edit: And the software was Paint Tool SAI

#16

I’ve been doodling alot lately with Paint Tool Sai and my workflow is getting better. It’s really an awesome software - I recommend warmly.

Sketched with a pen, scanned and colour added in Paint Tool SAI. Just a quick doodle that might turn into something more.

Detail of the previous picture that I’m working on…

Hey Cati, nice update that robe looks wonderful! Looking foward to more on that piece! Is there a story behind this guy?

#19

Hey Rabid1  Nice to see you here again.

Actually… it’s finished now. I’ve posted it in my portfolio gallery but here’s a better resolution version. I thought about adding some detail in the surroundings of the man but I found them too distracting so I left it like this.

This is the Man of Light. He’s the protector of the truth and all things good.

Thanks fo watching.

Hey, siiilon! Thanks !

#22

Hello, Really a nice work for your portfolio, love it!

#23

Hi again,

here’s a very quick sketch I made. Monotone drawing with a simple texture (my own photo) on top. I haven’t used much textures in my work so I’m trying them out. I like it though.

Just went through my previous sketches here. Either I’m terribly versatile or terribly inconsistent. Well… I just like to try everything.

ArtRage 3 was released a few days ago. Here’s some sketches made with pencil and watercolour - yes digital.
