ok this will be the starting point
Cat-modeling
Uhm … wasn’t this BlueCougar’s thread?
If you want to model the cat you’re more than welcome to open a new thread to show your progress.
sorry, thought making a good cat was a common objective in a common thread, i will open it when i have someting that worth showing, wait a second if blue cougar it’s working on it i can do someting else any thought’s…
Here’s a couple more sad attempts at drawing a cat. I’m partial to the middle one, but the cat doesn’t have to be fat. It can be scrawny like the one on the right.
The important thing is that it should not be unique in it’s style. It should blend well with the design of the other characters and not seem out of place.
Although I appreciate rikrog’s help with the concepts, I think the designs presented are a different style and the character will stand out (like placing Sid the sloth on the set of Shrek).
Hopefully, someone can make something out of these concepts that I’ve provided so far. I’ll try to do some more, but I’m already sick of trying to draw cats. :argh:

Thanks Kirt. That gives me a bit to work with. I’ve been messing around with the “Hero” model mesh lately rigging it in LW for the experience. If I come up with anything interesting I’ll post it in the Hero thread.

no problem kirt. true, i do have quite a particular style. i’m thinking of modeling my cat concepts, most likely post him in another forum sometime soon.
it will be most interesting to see how the aliens cat come along.
keep on truck’in
cheers
Here we go, got some time today to start on the cat model. The first few are shaded wireframes…

and finally one with some color, just poly’s no textures. This is just a rough out. Feedback is welcome, I’ll finish roughing out the legs and paws later this weekend once the kids are asleep…

Let me know how it looks compared to your concept Kirt!
Kenn
I like how the face is shaping up. That looks very close to the concept. The body, back of head and neck needs to be fleshed out some more though. It’s still pretty good. Keep going.
Thanks Kirt,
The body is just roughed out to get the geometry in place to fill out the cat form. Here is a bit more work to the face to give it more of the qualities in the concept sketch. Does anyone else hear Dom Deluise when they see this cats face? Maybe we can have a spin off after this…lol! Here we go!

I’m going to start roughing out more of the body form and limbs next. I’m filling him out more to be a big tom cat with a bit of weight on him eating the mice and trash around the trailer park. Kirt, do you want me to do the hair on his back and chest like I detailed the head? I thought I would help give you a direction to go on some details once I started in on his form.

Really nice work, the face is looking good. I like the hair coming off its head, gives a nice bit of character. My only real criticism at the moment is there seems to be to much width between the legs on the body. I know you haven’t done much work on that part so Its not much of a valid critique. Really nice work so far.
Here’s another update with the legs and feet done. Pushed the form about some for the legs and body and going to add hair tufts here and there to give some character to the form.

Kenn (&
Labor Day, plenty of time to get stuff done! Added more geometry to the form for “fur” and tufts here and there. The tail still needs some work and I think I’m going to make the paws bigger. Kirt I need you to weigh in on this and tell me what you like and what you don’t like. 6 pics in 3 posts…

He also sorta has a “Cat in the Hat” look to him with the black and white. Alright, let me know what you think about it.
Kenn (&
great progress Kenn, i like the hairy treatment… great way to make it look cartoony, way better than just slapping some fur on the model… but still, are we gonna use some fur on top of that? kirt?
the belly looks a little weird right now, a bit bumpy, but who am i to crit… i’m sure you know what you’re doing, i’ll just wait for the next wip shots
i think he would look cooler if the neck were just a tad thinner
Hmmm … not sure that I like the roughed-up body. I see what you’re trying to do here, but I think the geometry is really getting buggered with this. Won’t this cause odd deformations when the model is animated?
I’d go back to the previous smooth body and add only minor tufts of hair on key ponts of the body (chest, back high on spine, and maybe leg joints).
I think we can do more with the hair on this model by painting textures rather than making the mesh complex.
I also think the legs look very fragile compared to the size of his head and body. I wouldn’t oversize the feet and legs too much, because he’ll start to look like a kitten. However, there is room for some beefing up of the legs.
