can't select anymore - shows a menu (transorm marking?)

#1

Hi there,

it’s driving me crazy and maybe I am just to stupid…
Sometimes (I’ll guess if I click to fast and Maya is something doing in the background) I get a marking menu if I want to use my standard selection tool.
And no matter what key I am pressing, or tool I select - if I click in the view port (RM) I get this menu…

The only way to get rid of it is to close Maya and start again…
What’s going wrong here?

Thank you,
mickna

I get that now and then, as if Maya thinks a key is stuck. It’s really obnoxious. Usually I just mash both shift/control/alt keys and it gives up…

This has been a “problem” in Maya forever. I figured out what is going wrong a few years back. It was confusing me too. I would get it when clicking buttons too fast.

Marking menu’s have a “create” hotkey and a “release” hotkey that destroys the marking menu(MM). The “release” function is usually tied to the release of the same hotkey. What you are doing though, is you are pressing the hotkey for the MM, left clicking in the viewport, then probably holding down a shift/ctrl/alt modifier key along with this hotkey. Then you are releasing the MM hotkey without releasing the shift/ctr/alt key. Maya think’s you never ran the “release” function, since technically you didn’t release the hotkey for the MM, you released shift/ctrl/alt+that hotkey.

Anyways, the way you clear this up is to just hold down the hotkey for the MM again, left click in the viewport, then release the left click, then the MM hotkey and you should be fixed.

Be careful about pressing those modifier keys too fast. It can happen when you’re trying to do stuff like rotate the viewport(alt) immediately after bringing up a MM

Mayas viewport shortcuts alt lmb alt mmb bug stops working gives hotbox selection instead error

The whole point of marking menus is to let you work fast. This isn’t a scare quote “problem”, it’s just a problem.

@gilley:
“This has been a “problem” in Maya forever” - really?? I work with Maya since ver. 3 or 4 and never ended with this bug. This is only a problem for me since v2016 - Maybe all the past years I wasn’t fast enough?! :slight_smile:
Thank you for your help! Next time I’ll try your suggestion :wink:

@gfk:
agree!

Thanks both for your help.
